Title: What is this name please
Post by: Beard grandchild on Sunday 08 November 09 20:06 GMT (UK)
Mary Smith  was my gt gt grandmother. I can't find  either a birth or marriage certificate for her, but do have her on my gt grandmother's birth certificate.

I can't decide whether her maiden name was Cordon, Corden or Cadon.

Can anyone help please.

Thanks Monique,

The name was suggested to me by another family member as Cordon, and this is what we have both been trying to follow up with absolutely no success.

When I looked at it again the other day, I decided that I wasn't sure.....

I'll try your suggestion,

Thanks again,

Pat.

Hiya Pat,

Looking at the "or" in formerly I would say Cordon.

Mo

Thanks Mo,
I've tried the Cadon connection on Ancestry and not come up with anything, but neither have I found any information that fits when, previously, I've looked up Cordon.

I have her on the 1881 cencus, and on my gt grandmother's birth certificate. We are fairly sure that there is a Romany connection somewhere in this marriage, but I can't find Cordon/Cadon/Corden anywhere else that fits.

Thanks anyway,
Pat.

Hi
Where is she in 1881? Where/when was she born?

I think this is Mary Ann in 1861 with family in Alfreton, Belper:

Thomas Corden 34
Elizabeth Corden 33
John Corden 10
Ann Eizabeth Corden 8
Mary Ann Corden 4, Sutton On Trent, Nottinghamshire
George Corden 1

RG9; Piece: 2515; Folio: 90; Page: 10;

Place and year of birth match the 1881 entry for the family RG11; Piece: 3310; Folio: 9; Page: 11

Was she John Smith's second wife? She looks too young to be the mother of the 8yr old (or is that the snippet of the birth entry you have above?)

Monica  :)

In 1871, and surname still showing as Corden in Brimington, Chesterfield -  RG10; Piece: 3613; Folio: 118; Page: 51

Have you not been able to find a marriage entry for John and Mary Ann - I'm struggling to do so  :-\

I've got her on the 1881 census RG11,3310, 9, Page 11,

Then on daughter Eliza's birth certificate in 1873, living in Crown Yard, Chesterfield. She died in 1886 in the Worksop district, then her husband, John Smith married again in 1889 to Sarah Nicholls.

She was very young when Eliza was born if her estimated birth date is correct, so maybe they weren't married even though both the census and birth certificate say they were.

Could be. Perhaps that is why Eliza was baptised late too?
