Title: Birth/Baptism - William WALLACE
Post by: bcseeker on Sunday 15 November 09 03:06 GMT (UK)
I am looking for information on Wiliam Wallace Sr who married Sarah Williams.  Both were born about 1780.  They had 2 children William and Ellen.  On William Jr's marriage notice it stated he was from Chestnut - Hertfordshire - however that could be Cheshunt - Hertfordshire England
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi bcseeker,

Are you sure that Sarah's surname was Williams?

The only two marriages I have found are:
William WALLACE married Sarah THORGOOD at Much Hadham 19.10.1801
Children: William (1803), Thomas (1805), Mary (1807) Charles (1810) and Samuel (1812)

OR

William WALLIS married Sarah Clements at Cheshunt 19.09.1796

It's possible that either of the above ladies may have been a widow and Williams was her maiden name.

Not much help I'm afraid  ::)

The 1913 Ontario death registration for William Wallace Jr stated that his parents were William Wallace and Sarah Williams.   William Wallace Jr born May 1, 1843.  On William Jr's ON Canada marriage certificate it said he was born in Chestnut Hertfordshire ENG and that he was a widow.
Another family source said that William Wallace Sr and Sarah Williams lived in Kent England.  The 2 children that we know of are William Jr and Ellen.  Ellen became a missionary in Africa
William Wallace Jr was a gardener and landscaper who immigrated to US and was told that he set up a business, married and had 2 children.  Wife and children apparently died of plague and he moved to Canada about 1880.  I have no proof that he married in the states he could have married in England and then moved to the States.

I have a photograph of Sarah Williams Wallace

William Wallace Jr born May 1, 1843.

If William Wallace and Sarah Williams were born c. 1780 as you originally said - I don't believe that William Wallace Jr, born 1843, was their son as they'd have been abt 60+ yrs old when he was born.

Do you have the birth certificate for William Wallace Jnr?

It should state who his parents were including his mother's maiden name and his place of birth.

There are only two births registered for a William Wallace in Herts abt that time - one in 1841 in Ware and the other in 1845 in Watford. Neither appear to match your information.

Do you have the Wallace Family on any census in UK as that may clear up any anomalies?

Di

Oh that's a good find Gardener

No wonder I couldn't find a WALLACE  ::)

So it appears that Sarah Williams was born c. 1821 and William Wallis was born c. 1817, both in Cheshunt according to the 1851.

Only as you said bcseeker, hard to see that parents of William were born so early. And in fact these ones are much younger so perhaps it is not the right one?

The one thing that does match though is that William and Sarah Wallis/Wallace do have children named William and Ellen.

And the bonus is that Willialm Wallis jnr was Bp in Cheshunt 28 May 1843 which would match with a possible birth of May 1st, 1843.

From 1840 - 1861 they had 13 children who were baptised in Cheshunt (IGI Batch C072254)

I think it's the right family Gardener - it's just that the suggested birth dates of the parents was a bit off.

Thanks so much for this information.  You two are great!  I am sorry about the initial approx birth date I was going by what was given to me from a relative and never stopped to think how old they would be!

You said you found reference to their marriage "William Wallis marriage sept qtr 1839 at Edmonton"   Is that Sep 25 1839?  Is Edmonton in Hertfordshire?  We have an Edmonton in AB Canada and I know it obviously isn't there.

Again thanks so much. :)

Sept qtr 1839 means any time in July, August or September 1839.

Obviously if you have a marriage date of 25 Sept 1839 then it fits with the marriage record found by Gardener.

The district Edmonton spans the boundaries of the counties of Essex, Hertfordshire and Middlesex - UK.

Well I don't know. This Ellen is a servant, and nurse by 1881. I can't quite see her upping and off to Africa. Didn't you need some education to be a missionary?
I'll have another look.

I'll have another look.

At least she's still single by 1881 and a Nurse so maybe that was all she needed to help the poor in Africa  :-\

I've been looking for the deaths of William and Sarah Wallis.

bcseeker said that they had a picture of Sarah Williams Wallace which means the pic must have been taken when she was over 40 at least and more than likely 60+

The death records I've seen indicate that she may have died c. 1861 which doesn't make sense.

I think I'll have another look  ::)

Just so I don't lose him, I found  a George Wallace born Cheshunt about 1809. He is in Canterbury 1841/51. First clerk in King's School, then clergyman. 1861 he is in Hampshire, rector of All Saints, Burghclere.

Added: I just put that in because of the Kent clue but I don't see that he is connected. There is a bit about him here: http://anglicanhistory.org/england/sac/blain_opening2007.pdf should anyone stumble across this and want to know more.

William Wallace Jr is listed in both 1881 and 1891 Cdn census.
In 1881 is listed in Strathroy Middlesex East ON   ( must havebeen just after marriage as they were married in 1881)
In 1891 in West Middlesex ON - list children

The birth of a William WALLIS was registered in the June quarter 1843 Edmonton District  Vol.3  P.117.

I read the surname on the 1851 as WALLACE and Sarah's birthplace as Broxbourne and Maria's as Cheshunt.

Hope you have the correct pronunciation of Cheshunt - the second 'h' is silent.

Thanks Peter - fixed the typos. I did know that the "h" is silent, though I can't imagine why as it is not a place I am familiar with. Do you happen to know how Burghclere is pronounced?

Hi Gardener,

You have changed Maria's birthplace on your original posting to Burghclere whereas it should be Cheshunt.        Burghclere is in Hampshire and I have no idea of the local pronunciation - it's a long way from my manor.
