Title: 1891 Census look-up please. - COMPLETED.
Post by: Roaming Grannie on Tuesday 24 November 09 18:45 GMT (UK)
I would like to find my Grandmother Emily May born 8 Feb. 1879 in Hungerford and her Mother Fanny May born 1 April 1860 in Inkpen.
I found them together on the 1881 Census living at Fanny's parents
in Inkpen, John May 49 Born Inkpen, Emma born 48 born Inkpen and
Fanny's siblings William, George, Richard & Henry all born Inkpen.
Emily appears on the 1901 Census in Froxfield, Wilts. under the name Emily Talbot (married to Richard Talbot 6 July 1896).  William is on active service in the Crimea I believe at this time.
Fanny seems to have disappeared, I am assuming she married some time between the 1881 and 1891 Census and wonder is it possible that when the 1891 Census was taken Emily may have been included under the married name of Fanny (just a wild guess of course). This has been a brick wall for me for some considerable time and I would appreciate any help at all.

Hi,
Emily May appears to be the granddaughter of John & Emma. She was christened on 14/3/1880 at Inkpen. If this is the right person then her parents were Thomas Peter May and sarah. I found a Emily May living with the same people in Burnham,Eton,Bucks. Class RG12 Piece 1136 Folio 134 Page 41. Hope this is correct.
regards,
hussar

There is only 1 marriage reg for a Fanny May 1881-1891 Berkshire;

Henly

Grooms, Walter Harry HYDE and Alfred TOWNER

I will try and match the correct spouse up :)

Fannys POB is all wrong and age a little out and possibly it is not her, but will post anyhow. Daughter is transcribed as Mary but it looks more like MAY to me on image.
There is a birth June 1889, Reading , for a May Helen Hyde.

1891 Census
Reading, Berkshire
RG12/994/101/27

Walter H HYDE, 32, Head, Mar, Telephone Co foreman, born Westminster, Middlesex
FANNY Hyde, 28, Wife, Mar, born Grerp?, Oxfordshire
Mary Hyde, 2, Daug, born Reading, Berkshire

Maybe just a red herring but worth keeping for later reference.
1901 Census Fanny is born Henley, Oxon

Hi Roaming Grannie :)

I have just read the other postings on this Family ( which I should have done before finding what someone else had on your other posting).

Can I ask the obvious question.
How do you know Emilys Mother was Fanny?
Could you post what info is on her Marriage Cert please.

Trish

A sincere thanks to all who replied.  First, my apologies for the reference to the Crimean War, that was obviously the wrong war, I should have said Boer war.
To Trish, I have the Birth Certificate for Emily (my Grandmother),
1879 Births in the Sub-district of Hungerford in the Counties of Berks and Wilts #BXB 056754 8 February 1879 The Union Workhouse, Hungerford, Berks. Emily Girl Mother Fanny May
Signature & Residence of Informant Fanny May, Mother Union Workhouse, Registered 5 March 1879
No Name or occupation of Father given.
1896 Marriage at the Licence Room in the Parish of Inkpen
#MX 883823 July 6 1896 Richard Talbot 24 Labourer born Inkpen, Father John Talbot.
Emily May 17 Spinster born Inkpen no name of Father given.
I believe I may have looked at the Hyde & Towner names before and they did not match.
Thanks again for your time and effort.

Emily May 17 Spinster also shown as being born Inkpen no name for Father given.
Witnesses were George Franklin & Sarah Amy Teal.
