Title: Daniel Hill and Ann Caldwell
Post by: liznel on Thursday 03 December 09 12:35 GMT (UK)
Hi Everyone.

Daniel Hill married Ann Caldwell July 1865 Stranraer. 1871,81 &91 census find the family in Ayr. Looking for info on Daniels parents. Marriage cert sates parents were Solomon Hill and Maryann Kennedy. Death cert states Death cert (Died in Ayr) widow of Ann Caldwell his parents were Francis Hill and Jane Wyllie.

Any help and info would be appreciated

Hi Liz

Gosh he's a hard man to find  :-\ He shows as born c. 1821-23 in Stranraer on the later censuses. He was over 40 when he married, did he show as a bachelor on his 1865 marriage cert?

Can't see him in the earlier censuses (even trying under David as Daniel sometimes shows as David on entries). Have you been able to find him prior to 1865?

Monica  :)

On marriage certificate.

Daniel Hill aged 40 (Labourer) Bachelor, from  Bridge Street Stranraer. Annie Caldwell 36 also Bridge Street Stranraer.

Have not been able to find him prior to 1865. Cannot find his parents listed anywhere ( Soloman or Francis)If he was born in Stranraer I thought he may have been on the 1841/51 census but no trace. Perhaps they came from Ireland as Stranraer is the first stop.

Yes, that often happened. Doesn't explain though why he doesn't show on censuses prior to 1871. He is also consistent with the Stranraer birth place on his entries.

Also failing miserably to find daughter Margaret's birth under either Hill or Caldwell from 1856-60 in Stranraer or elsewhere.

The names of the children for Daniel and wife Ann don't help in giving any clues do they  :-\

Have you checked for potential deaths of the mothers' names given. Easier to search for married women than the men - although with a name like Solomon it should stand out!

Just checked on SP. No Sol* death (not a single entry through the censuses up to 1901 for that name with Hill) and nothing showing for deaths for mothers with that combination of names.

Just an interesting note, I thought I would look for Maryann Hill's death,on SP to see if her husband was a different name than Solomon. I found a Maryann Hill- single I believe the age to be 4 yrs and 4 months parents were Daniel Hill -labourer and Anne Caldwell. Date of death September 5, 1859 at Glen Hill? Street, Stranraer. Cause of death hooping cough with ?? complications for 14 days. Ann Caldwell her grandmother was present.
I thought this interesting as you have their marriage year as 1865?

Thanks Szac.

Thanks for the post. Looks like the same family. I have looked this up on SP. Ann Caldwell mother was also called Ann. It does not say on Mary Ann's death cert that her parents were married . It normally states mother married name as well as maiden name however it just states mothers name as Ann Caldwell which may indicate they were not married.

Many thanks for the info, much appreciated
