Title: Jane Harrison Dawson
Post by: staceyk84 on Friday 04 December 09 20:48 GMT (UK)
I have looked myself but i cannot find a baptism for Jane Harrison Dawson, I am trying to find her family so that would be a great start, she was born 1876 Hartley.

I believe there is a possibilty of Jane being the child of Isabella and Jesse Dawson, it was a hint on ancestry, the reason i think this is a strong possibility is that Jane has a son called Jesse, her second born son born 1901.

If anybody could help me in the right direction from the baptism i would be grateful  :)

P.S with Jane's middle name being Harrison i did do a search for a marriage between Harrison and Dawson but didn't find anything, i also didn't find Jesse Dawson marrying an Isabella oddly enough, although i'm sure it has to be there somewhere!

Hi Stacey,

This is just a theory as I cant find a marriage either of a Isabella Harrison to Jesse Dawson.

Going back to his parents Jesse/Jane it is possible she was Jane HARRISON.

Marriage;
Jesse DAWSON
December 1837
Gateshead 24 104
On same page Jane HARRISON/Jane MITCHELL

If you purchase Jane Harrison Dawsons birth cert then you can establish her Mothers maiden name and then work backwards.

Having said that there is this possible marriage;
Jesse DAWSON
September 1873
Newcastle T
10b 112
On same page is;
Elizabeth Isabella MARSHALL
Matilda HICKS
Maybe she went by Isabella and not Elizabeth??

Back to Jesse Snr;

1841 Census
Seaton Lodge,
Eardson, Northumberland
HO107/820/19/Earsdon

Jesse DAWSON, 30, Schoolmaster
Jane Dawson, 20
Mathew, 2
John, 1
All born in County

Remember Jesse jnr is with his brother John in 1871 Census.

I checked this on the Newcastle registrar's site, http://www.newcastle.gov.uk/msearch.nsf/msearch?openform and Jesse Dawson did indeed marry Elizabeth Isabella Marshall

Wow thank you for all the information. how odd that Isabella is a Marshall, Jane Harrison Dawson marries a Marshall herself  ::)

This is all useful information. But I agree with nort and trish that you need to purchase her birth certificate in order to have conclusive proof of her parentage.

I haven't added anything of her 'family' to my tree, i simply make a note of it and if i don't find evidence of it being correct it will stay in my notes until later, i do not buy certificates unless i really have to, there is so much you can do for free, of course you could wrong this way but as i said i do not add anything without some proof that it is correct, i am doing as much as i can this way and then going back to everything that cannot be done without certificates  :)

I am 90% certain this will be the correct family so thank you for all the efforts, there aren't actually many options for Jane on the census returns before she was married and the 'Jesse' as her father and being her second sons name fits in with her son being Jesse although he was know as Alex not Jesse.

I do hope if it is the correct family that Isabella Marshall isn't a relation to my 'Marshall's' also, that would be very odd  :(

Nothing odd about it really. Cousins often married and also Marshall is a pretty common name so more likely they were not related.

Post by: staceyk84 on Saturday 05 December 09 12:04 GMT (UK)
True, i just would never marry a cousin of mine, far too annoying  :)

My Marshall's are originally from Durham but they may be no relation to Isabella.   To be related then John Marshall would need to be the brother or cousin of David John Marshall born 1793 Durham, he is the grandfather of Jane Harrison Dawson husband Thomas.

John Marshall married Anne Reed 14 Oct 1821 in Jarrow St. Paul.

Thanks, Reed is also a name in my family tree that married a Marshall  :)

David John Marshall married Catharine Reed in Jarrow,  its not impossible for John &  David to be brothers and Catharine & Anne i have the same situation in the other side of the family, it would be easier for me i guess! Researching one family instead of different branches because they ultimately come from the same families, if only family trees were so easy  ::)

John Marshall and Anne Reed were my GGGGGParents. I have a copy of Johns death cert somewhere. He died March 29 1880 in Hartley. Person registering death was Jesse Dawson, of Hartley.
In 1871 he was a widower living at 30 Double Row, Seaton Delaval, with family including daughter Elizabeth age 28. RG10/5130/39/9.

Hi Alan thank you, David John Marshall and Catharine Reed are my great x 3 Grandparents.  Does Jane Harrison Dawson come into your tree at all or are Jesse and Isabella not her parents?  :)
Title: Re: Jane Harrison Dawson
Post by: WolfieSmith on Saturday 05 December 09 20:54 GMT (UK)
I've got Jane H Dawson in my tree as a daughter of Jesse Dawson and Elizabeth Marshall as per the census records. Elizabeth was the third daughter of John and Anne named Elizabeth so maybe thats why she used her middle name.
Its 99% certain that she's your Jane Harrison Dawson, but you would need her birth or marriage cert to be 100% certain.
Its not my branch, I'm connected through Mary Ann Marshall, eldest daughter of John and Anne, baptised May 26 1822, Jarrow, but it does look like we are very distant cousins
Alan.

Yes i am very certain its the right people, like i posted earlier a baptism record would be great right about now  :)

Hopefully i can find out that this is correct, i can fill in Jane's descendants for your tree if we find out that it is 100% connected!  It would also be good to know if both our Reeds/Marshalls were connected other than through the marriage of Isabella Marshall but i haven't found out anything about David J Marshall before his marriage because of the age and lack of census back then.

Thanks for your replies  :)

Looking at the 1901 census for Jesse Dawsons family,  he has a son Matthew Harrison Dawson.
In 1891 he had a daughter Jane H. Dawson and a son Matthew H. Dawson.
Lets make it 99.99% certain that his daughter Jane H. Dawson is Jane Harrison Dawson. RG13/4809/30/6.

Ha yes i would think so personally  :)

Jane has a son in 1901 Jesse Alexander Ewen Marshall, it would be a very strange coincedence for my Jane to name her son Jesse and her not be the Jane Dawson who has a father and brother named Jesse!
Title: Re: Jane Harrison Dawson
Post by: staceyk84 on Sunday 06 December 09 12:22 GMT (UK)
I think without a doubt i have just found confirmation that Jane Harrison Dawson is the daughter of Jesse Dawson, in 1871 when Jesse is living with his brother there are children with the name 'Ewen' i am unsure where this name fits into the family yet but as i posted earlier, one of Jane's children is Jesse Alexander Ewen Marshall.

Now i just need to find out who the 'Ewen' came from, the children in 1871 say 'Nephew'  Jesse Dawson Ewen 4, George Ewen 3, Both born Seaton Sluice.

There are far too many links in these people for them not to be the correct family. :)

Edit : Sarah Dawson married John Ewen 1865 (Sarah the daughter of Jesse and Jane).

It turns out that John Ewen is the son of George Ewen of Scotland and the family owned the Salmon fishing rights of St Mary's Island and built cottages there, they eventually turned it into an Inn before being evicted off the Island for too much noise in 1895.

It has always been said that in our family that the Dawson's used to own St Mary's Lighthouse, which obviously they didn't as John Ewen is the connection we have to it and he is a relation through marriage to a Dawson, and the Lighthouse didn't even exist when he lived on the Island it was built circa 1898.  Both John and George were Salmon fishermen and Inn Keepers.

Hi Staceyk84/Allan,
Fantastic :) ;)

It all looks pretty conclusive to me.
I would put the Certs on a "present list" though Stacey, as if you are like me I love to hold them in my hand. It brings more flesh and blood to otherwise just names and dates on paper.

Best of luck and it is amazing you have each found another descendant.

Trish :)

Thanks Trish :)  My Mum will be pleased when i tell her the story surrounding St Mary's Island, the family have always said there was a connection to the lighthouse now we know it's the Island itself not the lighthouse!

Hi Mutly, it certainly has been a long time since this was posted.

For those reading this I have since had DNA done via Ancestry which has confirmed my connection to Jane & Jesse.

Hello Stacey

I saw 2 or 3 of your posts about your family from Seaton Sluice/Old Hartley about 4 yrs ago, at the same time had a family issue and never got around to posting on here, so apologies for that.
My mother is Alex Marshall's daughter, nearly 90, but still going strong.
Your grandfather Gordon and his brother Colin were her cousins, and Jane (always got Janey, pronounced Jenny) and Melvin (you mentioned on here as Robert M, was always Melvin, sometimes got Bob when he worked in the shipyards at Blyth) were her aunt and uncle, they lived 3 doors apart.
I've got some photos and information you may be interested in.

Oh that would be lovely!

Yes my Great Grandad was known as Melvin  :) my Mum had no idea he was called Robert and Jane was Jenny as you say. I do have a photo of Jenny but none of the others.

It would be lovely to talk to you more and see the photos. I believe there is a way to message each other on here to exchange email addresses so I will see how to do that now.

Stacey.
