Is there anyone who would be able to help me? The James Bunn I am looking for was born in Essex c1840 - his parents may have been called Henry and Hannah Jourdan (Jordan) - the earlist real information I can get is from the Channel Islands 1881 Census, when he was married to Adelaide - they were army people and had their first child in India c1874.
I wondered if there was anyone who could look up on the 1851 Census for Essex, to see if he had any brothers & sisters?
Thanks so much for any help received.

Essex is a big county. Can you narrow it down at all? Which regiment was he in? Have you tried to get the army records?

Hi, Andrea - I have no idea what regiment he was in - I do know his second child was born at Woolwich in Kent, c1875, and his third child in Wiltshire. I expect I will have to go to The British Library, sometime, to see if I can find his army records there. He was actually born in Danbury, Essex.
I know very little about Essex - Danbury was near Chelmsford - thats all I know! Towards the end of the 20th Century, he was living in Lancashire - and was a Sergeant Major (retired from the army, I suppose) - Anyway, thanks for your interest.

Hi Ros
Do you have any idea of when/where James married to get some futher details from the certificate? Adelaide's maiden name from one of the childrens' birth certificates perhaps?

I think the army records are at Kew.

Hello,
This is probably not useful info but just to let you know on the 1871 census for Danbury there is a James Bunn Junior, 29, b. Runsell House, Danbury living with his wife Ellen and daughter Clara Louise 2. Also, in Danbury there is a James Bunn Senior, 54, b. Purleigh, Essex, living with his wife Mary Ann 34 and children.
Unusual for the census to denote Jnr and Snr so presume they are father and son living close but with their own families. Both James' appear to be Grocers.
As I said, probably a red herring ;D
Good luck

Hi folks,
That's a point - I could get one of the children's birth certificates - I was stuck because I couldn't see past the eldest being born abroad - and, because I couldn't find any evidence of them being married in Britain, I assumed that they were married in India, The only trouble is, that even if I found Adelaides maiden name, it doesn't help me with the Essex connection. Thanks so much for giving me the idea to get a siblings birth certificate, though - that will at least give me a little bit more info.
I thought that the India records for the army are at British Library and not at Kew??Not really sure.
I wish the James Bunn Snr and Jnr were the right ones - but don't think they are!
Many thanks.

PRO at Kew holds "the official War Office records for 1660-1964". Just looked it up to make sure! There are lots of web sites dealing the the army in India. Do a Google search. If you have the place of birth of the child you can probably find out which regiments were there at the time. If he was an ordinary soldier who joined before 1871 he had to serve 21 years minimum. After 1871 it could be 12 years.

There are some India BMD indexes at http://www.1837online.com (pay per view) if you select the overseas section.
When/where was Adelaide born? Might that give some idea of where they may have married?
Best wishes

I have just looked at the 1881 census for them. The first child was born East Indies. Not India. As James is a labourer then he must have left the army by then.

Do you have them in 1891?
49 Tickle Street Manchester P3236 F133
James 51 Carriers horsekeeper b Danbury
Aleaide (sic) 43 b Channel Islands Jersey
Mary Ann 15 Lithographic Asst b Woolwich
George 13 Carmans Asst b Trowbridge
Charles James 9 b Guernsey
No mention of the army anywhere there. Is the Sgt Major bit on the 1901?

In 1901 James 61 and Adelaide 54 are living in Bolton, no children with them. He is a General Labourer.
