Would appreciate a lookup of the SA Birth Index for the following........
It's possibly..... Ellen (Eleanor) McBRIDE born 1860 - Adelaide.
Parents - Patrick McBride & Annie Kelly.
Many thanks
Sarra :)

Hi Sarra,
Sorry no sign of it in SA. No births to Patrick McBride and Annie Kelly. Earliest birth to a Patrick McBride is in 1868 mother Margaret McLean
Cheers Kris :)

They were Catholics so I suspect this would explain the lack of a birth registration.

Kris,
You are very very quick :) :)
Yes they were Catholics.....what would be the reason for them not having their children's births registered??.
Thank you for the extra information ....I did have some of it somewhere....however it will save me having to rummage through my pile of papers. This time I will enter it all into my FH Program. ::)
Thanks :)

Hi Sarra,
Although Civil registration was compulsory by this time, and people were fined for non registration (if caught) many people particularly those of the Catholic Faith (and Scottish Presbyterians for that matter) were still reticent to register their children's births. Their children were baptised according to their faith and they felt the additional burden of civil registration was unnecessary.

I see most of the marriages (including Ellen) were in St Patricks, perhaps the children were also baptised there.
Catholic Archives may be of assistance

Kris,
Trust the Irish to go against the grain.
It's the three daughters (born in Australia) of Patrick & Annie McBride that have not been registered........Annie Jane (1863) Catherine Matilda(1858) & Ellen Ida (1860).
I'll try the Catholic Archives see if they will help me.
The BISA entry for John McBride (1847 NI) I know is not correct...because he did marry Sarah Anne Hollywood in 1871.
Robert....I can't connect the Ellen McBride born 1865.....
Thanking you both for taking the time to search for me.
All the best for the New Year. :) :)

Hi Sarra,
By the marriage record Catherine Matilda was born more like 1863 than 1858. It is unfortunate when birth records do not exist. I have some missing from this era too and they were not part of the two main groups who did not always register their children. We do find quite a few unregistered in our early history. I am sure distance also paid a part in this. With the vastness of our country I wonder how many people (particularly those in rural areas) were ever actually fined for non registration.
Good luck with Catholic Archives.
Cheers Kris :)

Kris,
I don't know why Catherine Matilda would reduce her age on her marriage record...after all she was marrying Thomas who was 20 years her senior.LOL
I have a copy of her death certificate...she was 44 years old when she died in 1884...so her age caught up with her in death. :o :o :o
I'll get on to the Catholic Archives...if I don't have anymore visitors...they have just arrived with my coffee. ;D
