hello the only information i have on a maternal great great grandmother is what i have from her marriage certificate to Thomas STRAW and her family here in Australia.
the information is as follows
Jessie STEWART b1874 Scotland
Parents - Hugh STEWART and Janet MITCHELL
witness - margaret stewart (was she a sister)
the family lived in Wollongong at the time Jessie and Thomas married in may 1890. Janet signed the marriage registration as Jessie was under aged.
I would like to find more on this family. Did Jessie have siblings? when did they come to australia? ancestors?
somewhere i came across her parents marrying in Dalry, Ayr (unfortunately it must have been before i started to note my sources) hence the reason i have added that area to the title. Is this the correct area to be searching? maybe it is why i cant find anything.
looking forward to what help the wonderful listers of rootchat can supply.

Unfortunately checking SP for J* St*rt between 1873 and 1876 only throws up 4 returns in Dalry - none of them Jessie

maybe dalry isnt where they were from. I just found where i had the marriage sourced from - IGI.
i wonder if she was listed as jeannie but married as jessie :D

Hugh Stewart, and Janet Mitchell, were married 26/Dec/1865. Dalry, Ayr.
Their first child Adam Stewart, was born 01/Feb/1866. Dalry, Ayr.
The family then moved to Riccarton, Ayr, where their second child James Stewart, was born 22/Dec/1867.
By 1869. the family were living in Dalmellington, Ayr. where they had Elizabeth, born 26/July/1869. Margaret, born 18/Aug/1871. and your Janet, born 23/April, 1874.
By 1881. the family are still in Dalmellington, Ayr. the father Hugh Stewart, has passed away, as Janet Mitchell, is a widow.
There are two further children i do not have birth dates for.
James Stewart, born abt. 1876. Dalmellington, its most likely the James, born 1867. has died and this James, named after him.
Grace Stewart, born abt 1879. Dalmellington, Ayr.

so for some reason in the following 9years at least janet, margaret and jessie have move to australia. maybe one of the older sons had had moved out here and they came with him.
now more questions to find answers too. loving it.

If you are looking to go further back on the Stewart, and Mitchell, families, i suggest you purchase the 1865 marriage certificate for Hugh Stewart, and Janet Mitchell, this will provide both sets of parents of the couple.
You can purchase this from Scotlandspeople, for a small sum.

just added that to my list. I can't find janet's death in nsw or western australia (her daughter's family moved to that state)

Hi, I looked up your marriage of Hugh and Janet, my great grandparents were also Stewart and Mitchell but from Aberdeenshire. So I checked on yours but no connection.
Here is the info
Date: December 26, 1865 at Dalry
Hugh Stewart age 22, Iron Miner- bachelor, resided at Drakemire?. Dalry.
Janet Mitchell age 20, Mill worker-spinster resided at Milton, Kilbirnie.
Hugh's parents- James Stewart- pitheadman
Margaret Stewart m.s. Miller (deceased)
Janet's parents- James Mitchell- iron miner
Elizabeth Mitchell m.s. Crawford
Witnesses were Robert Stewart and Mary Smith

when i found out that jessie's surname was stewart i thought i was in for some challenges. yesterday i read in a magazine that a lot of the scottish registrations actually have a lot more information then the english so between that and the helpful listers on rootschat i havent lost heart. ;D

I have been trying to find a trace of Janet in Wollongong Australia to no avail today. i have started to think maybe she had remarried.
Wollongong had mining in that area. Jessie married into a mining family.
i will be heading to the state library on saturday to look at electrol rolls to see if i can find more.

I have just started to look up my family history I am the second grandson of Adam Stewart Hugh and Janet's first born and I have nearly all the dates where and when the family died if you are interested.

I have a Hugh Stewart born at Kilmaurs, Ayrshire born 1849 son of John Stewart and Mary Wylie formerly of Kilwinning, Dalry and Kilbirnie. My interest is with Robert Stewart an older brother of Hugh. As yet have not followed Hugh Stewart's line

I think you have a different hugh stewart than the one in my family tree the hugh mcintyre stewart who was my great grandfather married janet mitchell at Dalry 26th December 1865 age 22 that would make him born 1843. Hugh's parents were James stewart and Margaret stewart and and i have no info as to any other children but as to hugh's and janet's children I have info as to births and deaths to most,8 of which died here in Australia.

I did not know that Hugh was born in Irland,as the only info I have learnt is the corraspondence between you "scruffyones" on the Stewarts I was amazed when I first logged on and found out all that info I didn't even know that my grandfather had any siblings as I remember he was very conservative.From your knowledge you have out I guess you must be a decendant of Hugh Stewart? Have you been able to trace back any further with Hugh's parents?

No i am not related to the Stewart's, i was just helping Scruffyones, because i had certain Ayrshire, material at hand.
Going by census reports the Stewart's, came from Ireland, about 1846/47. they settled in Dalry, Ayrshire.
1851. census, Dalry, Ayr.
Address, Sharron St.
Stewart James, Head, M. M. age 35 years, Lab. at Pithead, born Ireland.
Stewart Margaret, Wife, M. F. age 33 years, born Ireland,
Stewart Robert, Son, M. age 9 years, Scholar, born Ireland,
Stewart Hugh, Son, M. age 7 years, Scholar, born Ireland,
Stewart Jane, Daur, F. age 5 years, born Ireland,
Stewart William, Son, M. age 3 years, born Ayr, Dalry,
Stewart David, Son, M. age 1 year, born, Ayr, Dalry,
Devlin John, Visitor, U. M. age 22 years, Gen Lab. born Ireland.
The two younger Stewart, children were stated as born in Dalry, Ayr, but there are no birth registrations for them, this is nothing unusual in Scotland, prior to 1855. when birth, marriage, and death registration became compulsory.
This census only shows when the Stewart's, roughly arrived in Scotland by place of childrens births.
I will post more info later i have to go out.

Stewart Hugh, age 18 years, Dalry, Born Ireland,
Stewart William, age 13 years, Dalry, born Dalry,
Stewart David, age 11 years, Dalry, born Dalry,
Stewart James, age 9 years, Dalry, born Dalry,
Stewart Grizel, age 5 years, Dalry, born Dalry,
Stewart Adam, age 3 years, Dalry, born Dalry.
Three more children born since 1851. census the only births that are registered are the last two after 1855.
Grizel Stewart, F. born 02/Dec/1856. Dalry/Ayr, Parents James Stewart, and Margaret Miller.
Adam Stewart, M. born 07/Sep/1858. Dalry/Ayr, parents James Stewart, and Margaret Miller.
The mother Margaret Miller Stewart, died 1861. in Dalry/Ayr.
If you get Margaret's, death certificate it should provide her parents names.

Thank you so much for your time and help it has been very enlightening I knew I was of Irish decent on my mothers side and always thought I was scotch only on my fathers side now I find Iam more Irish than any other.
