Title: William Sabey born about 1816 Kimbolton
Post by: ednalou on Friday 01 January 10 12:04 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find the above person on the 1841 census.  He was born about 1816 Kimbolton.  He married Mary Ann Righton 20th April 1846 Hargrave.  He died 1884 Denford Lodge.  He has 4 children to Mary Ann.

Can anyone help me please.

Happy New Year to you all

Regards

Gillian

Hi Gillian

A Happy New Year to you too.

I can't find him in 1841, but I'm still looking

But possibly of more interest to you is that I have Sabeys from Kimbolton in my own tree - not direct line, but connected to my two Sabey lines, which all go back to Colmworth, Beds.

The Kimbolton branch started with Goodman Sabey, baptised 9 March 1760 at Eaton Socon, son of Richard and Rebecca (Fox) Sabey who married three times in Kimbolton - 1782 to Mary Joyce, 1800 to Mary Jacob, and 1819 to Hannah Mumford.

By Mary Joyce he had a son Joyce Sabey in c1787 who married Elizabeth Garvins at Kimbolton in 1814. By Mary Jacob he had a son Jacob Sabey in c1805. Mary Jacob was buried on 25 Apr 1818 age 44.

So your William could be either the son of Goodman and Mary (Jacob) or of Joyce and Elizabeth. Not having access to Huntingdon Records Office, and as these are pretty peripheral in my tree (Goodman was my 1st cousin 7 times removed) I haven't researched them much at all. But I'll make a start now!

What were the names of William's four children? Found three of them now in 1851. William appears either to have had a previous marriage as he has a 10 year son William in 1851, or else William is Mary Ann's son - possibly the latter as he was born at Hargrave, the same as Mary Ann. I don't suppose you have the 1846 marriage cert to get his father's name?

Hi David

Happy New Year to you.

William Sabey who is 10 is actually my great grandfather William Smith Wrighton.  He was born to Mary Ann Righton out of wedlock.  He was born 1841.  The surname of Righton differs as you will probably well know from past experience on Family Trees.  I havent any idea of William Sabey's parents are for sure.

The children of William Sabey and Mary Ann were:-
John Sabey born about 1848 Norfolk
Elizabeth Sabey born about 1850 Kimbolton
Tryphena Sabey born about 1852 Kimbolton
Mary Sabey born about 1854 Kimbolton.

I dont know who these children married.  I have John on the 1851 and 1861 census but nothing after that.
Elizabeth I have her on the 1851, 1861, and 1871
Tryphena on the 1861 and 1871

Mary on 1861 and 1871

Any Help would be much appreciated.

Regards

Gillian

Hi Gillian

So William Sabey aged 10 in 1851 was actually William Wrighton, and the chances are that William Sabey born c1816 wasn't the father at all. It seems too long a gap between 1841 and 1846 when they married for him to have been the father and for there to have been no other children until after they married.

Is William Smith Wrighton significant? Any middle name of an illegitimate child that looks like a surname is often an unsubtle announcement to the world as to who the father was.

I'll see what I can dig up about the four Sabey children.

Do I assume that you don't have the 1846 marriage cert?

Hi David

No I am afraid not I dont have the marriage certificate of William Sabey and Mary Ann.

William Smith Wrighton was my Great Grandfather he was born 22nd Feb 1841 Hargrave Northants. Died 8th Nov 1930 Grimsby.  William married Emma Reynolds 11 Nov 1860 Kimbolton, they had 4 children Arthur W Wrighton born 1860 Gt Straughton Hunts. Louisa 1864 Kimbolton, Agnes 1867 Kimbolton, then Charles Henry 24 Feb 1882 Kimbolton Grandad (he died 4 Feb 1942 Grimsby, married Priscilla Kerman. Emma Reynolds died not long after my Grandad was born in 1882.  I am not sure but Mary Ann's mother was Elizabeth Barker she married a William Wrighton 2 Apr 1804 Gt. Stukeley, I dont know when he died, cos when I go on IGI she has 4 children, but no mention of the father. William Righton 1815, Hargrave, John 1817 Hargrave, Mary Ann 1820 Hargrave, then Robert 22 Feb 1822 Hargrave, then she then married a John Jelles 1825. It seems a bit of a family doesnt it.

I hope I have explained myself alright.

Gillian

Hi Gillian

This is what I've found:

                          Descendants of Joyce Sabey

55.

Hi David

Thank you very much for all that information.

I have been in touch with the Wrighton's side and they think because Mary Ann Wrighton had William out of wedlock, they sometimes just put Smith as the surname, so when he was christened, thats how he got to be William Smith Wrighton.

Do you think that could be correct.

Thanks once again.

Happy Tree Hunting

Hi Gillian

I've never heard of that, and doubt it.  When he was christened Mary Ann told the vicar what his name was, and he was baptised as William Smith RIGHTON. I've never knowingly seen anyone with a middle name Smith because he was illegitimate. As I said, a middle name which looks like a surname is often an indication of who the father was, possibly even William SMITH

Hi David,

I thought I would tell you the information on William Smith Wrighton

It is thought that Smith was his fathers.  This was often where the mother wasn't married and she gave the child the surname as the middle name, in the hopes that if they married the surname would be correct, and in this case would have dropped the name Wrighton.  This is what my relative had said.
