Hi Folks,
Please can you offer any suggestions as to why I can find details of marriage banns then no marriage?
The Banns in question are those between Frederick Lewis & Annette Emerline Voullaire Campbell which can be found on Ancestry.co.uk. They were called on three Sundays 30th October, 6th & 13th November 1853 at St. James Clerkenwell. Both were residents of this parish.
Annette was born in October 1815, and baptised on 3rd June 1821 at St. Pancras Old Church, and I have found her on the 1841 census living with 3 of her sisters Angelina, Emma & Matilda in Margaret Street, Clerkenwell, but then nothing until this record of the Banns being called. Followed by nothing! Can't find her as Miss Campbell or Mrs Lewis anywhere!
I do have a death certificate for an Annette Campbell who died on 30th June 1886, at 22 George Street, Marylebone. "Found dead. Burns from fire which broke out in her bedroom during the night. Accidental." I am not sure if this is the correct certificate because it gives her age as 55, but as she was born in 1815 she was more like 75. The informant was George Danford Thomas, coroner. Inquest held 30th June. So no clues about family members.
I'll keep my fingers crossed someone can find something I have missed.
Best Wishes,
Patsy

Its only a possibility but perhaps he died before the wedding?Have you checked for a death for him [or even another marriage to someone else around that time]?

The sisters are not together in1851
Angelina is at HO107 1535 75 42, a lodger, a needlewoman.

Thank You Roofy, that was a quick reply.
I unfortunately have no knowledge about Frederick Lewis at all other than his name, and if he is in the same business as Annette's dad that might not be real either! Annette's dad was an actor manager who was born Andrew Leonard Voullaire, but was know as Mr. Campbell in his professional capacity.
One of Annette's older sisters Maria Louisa Voullaire married John Benjamin Donoghue, but he was known as Mr. Dunn, and together they left for Australia where Mr. Dunn set up a theatrical company, so names are not always what you think!
I had hoped to find Annette & Frederick on the next census, which would have been 1861, and then found out his age, profession and place of birth, but so far I have drawn a complete blank. I wonder if they too went to Australia or somewhere. There are some Voullaire-Campbell connections in South Africa which I have failed to connect so far, but they are military rather than theatrical.
Thank You for your help and interest.

Hi Lizdb,
Thank you for the information about Angelina. I think I have found her on other census returns, but always alone so no other family members to make sure it is the right Angelina. Fortunately it was not a common name at that time.
I have a death certificate for an Angelina Campbell who died on 1st August 1895, aged 80, Shoreditch Infirmary. The certificate states she was a widow, but all census returns state she was unmarried and deaf. So was she Miss Campbell or Mrs. Campbell? I don't suppose I will ever know for sure.
Angelina was born c1813 and baptised the same day as her sister Annette - 3rd June 1821 at St. Pancras Old Church, so in 1895 she would have been near 82 year old. Perhaps with her being deaf the staff in Shoreditch Infirmary could not communicate clearly with her, which could have lead to them assuming she had been married.
Thank you for you help.

Dear Jan,
Yes, I think you have found her in 1861, so the marriage never took place in 1853! The Bounder!!!!!!
Why I think this could be the correct census entry is back in 1851 Annette's sister Angelina lived in Bristow Street, possibly 5a. I think the census entry is HO 107/1535 Folio 75, page 42, Shoreditch, Hoxton New Town, District 3. Also she was a needlewoman, so same profession and almost the same address.
Thanks for looking up the records for me.
Best Wishes,
Patsy

Glad to have found her :) Of course she may have jilted Fredrick rather than the otherway round ( though not if the marriage is him of course :))

I believe she may be listed in 1871 as "Annette C. Voullaire"
RG10/489 81/37
206 Cambridge Road, Bethnal Green
Annette C. Voullaire, 55, lodger, sempstress, b. St. Pancras

Have you looked through the pages of the actual marriage register? Often the vicar will enter all the details in the register book a few days before the wedding.
If the wedding doesn't take place the vicar will scratch through the entry. It may be worth looking for the three months after the banns were read to see if it was a last minute left at the alter or called f before that stage.
I have seen all the details of several occasions in a marriage register and then the entry crossed through diagonally.

Thank you everyone for all your good suggestions which I will follow up.
Sorry I did not get back to you sooner, but I have only just spotted your replies - must have missed them somehow!
Thank you also for the census reference for 1871, which I am now off to have a look at, as I had not discovered that entry previously.
Best Wishes & Happy Searching,
Patsy

I have in my family a case of the banns being called but the marriage not taking place and I believe it was because her parents objected. Unlike your Annette, my ancestor was under 21. Actually the marriage did take place a year later, 6 weeks after she had her 21st birthday. Perhaps someone else raised objections about the marriage of Annette to Frederick? Perhaps he was already married?

Thank You Chirp, for your suggestions, unfortunately poor Annette never married according to census returns, and as she had 19 brothers and sisters I suspect her dad, Andrew would have been pleased to see her 'taken care of.' I guess we will never know the real reason behind calling off the marriage - one thing for certain he was not marrying her for her money!
I hope your ancestor lived "Happily Everafter"
Best Wishes,
Patsy

Yes Patsy she did! She and her husband had 6 children and she lived to be 84 and he to be 79.
