Title: M.I`s for Tanfield?
Post by: Dougalgeorge on Thursday 07 January 10 18:47 GMT (UK)
Hello to all  :)

I wonder if anyone has the MI`s for Tanfield?

I am looking for all Blackbird family members.

I was in the North East at Christmas and managed to get round St Mary`s at Whickham, and then Tanfield was next on my list.....and then the snow fell....and fell.

Anything that anyone can find would be brilliant.

Kindest regards
Tracey

Thanks Albert  :)  Much appreciated.
The info is marvellous.

Can I ask if the place mentioned is the parish?
I know my lot were from Tanfield, Swalwell, Whickham and Low Thornley mainly so I wonder if the entries listed under Gateshead are another branch or could Gateshead cover these places as well  ???

I`m back to 1730 with the marriage of Mathew Blackbeard and Jane Wild, but there are a few of the marriages you mention that I haven`t seen before  ;D
Blackbird being such an unusual surname,  has been a breath of fresh air to research. I keep moving on to other parts of the family but can never resist a bit of Blackbird info  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Thanks again

Kindest regards
Tracey

Tracey,

Yes. The places mentioned are parishes.

Starting from Ryton to the west they run Ryton, Whickham and Gateshead along the south banks of the River Tyne. The parishes of Tanfield and Lamesley adjoin Whickam to the south.

If the BLACKBIRDS were pitmen or associated with the pits it would not have been the slightest bit unusual for them to have moved backwards and forwards between Whickham and its neighbouring parishes as they followed the development of the coal trade during the 1600's and 1700's (Swalwell, originally part of Whickham, did not become a parish in its own right until 1905).

Sunniside & District History Society have recently published an excellent little book entitled "Like Carrying Coals to Newcastle" - The Story of the Tanfield Way which outlines the coal trade's development and why it is likely families such as the BLACKBIRDS would have moved to Tanfield.

Hi Albert  :)

Thank you for that.

Some of my Blackbird`s were keelmen so I can see why they moved around.  I must have a look at the Sunniside HS.  (Coincidentally, I grew up in Sunniside, worked there, and still have family there.)

:) Thanks again for your time and effort.

Hello

I have the following records of Blackbird burials in Tanfield:

20 May 1762 John son of Matthew Blackbird of Tanfield Head
28 May 1762 Mary wife of Matthew Blackbird of Tanfield Head
13 Feb 1782 Matthew Blackbird senior of Ryton parish
11 Sep 1787 Mary dau of Matthew Blackbird, deceased of Yewy Hurst
(Yewy Hurst was later known as Ewehurst)

I hope these help. I do not know of any records for M.I.s.

My interest in the Tanfield area are the Ledger family.

Tracy

Are you interested in Blackbird Tanfield baptisms for the years 1719 - 1812?

And any other names also.

Hi Palform  ;D

I`m interested in anything you can find for the Blackbird family !  They are my direct line (my Mother was a Blackbird)  and I keep going back to them as they are how this addiction all started.

Thanks for your continuing help  ;D ;D ;D

Kindest regards

Title: Blackbird surname

Tracy

Whilst searching the Heworth 1871 census I came across William Blackbird, a Master Butcher, age 26 living in Felling and born Bensham. The census reference is RG10/5050 folio 37 page 4.

The same chap is also recorded on the 1881 census (www.familysearch.org) at 3 Belgrave Terrace RG11/5029 folio 76 page 2.

If you do not have access to the 1871 census I can send a copy to you.

Thanks Keith  ;D

I have seen other Blackbird`s in various census.  My Grandad`s cousins lived around Felling, I remember him telling me so.  There are also some in Wallsend, Houghton-le-spring,  and Wallsend areas. I am sure they are all the same family somewhere.

I already have had my parents wandering round St Mary`s at Whickham (1 grave) and Tanfield (0 graves). Maybe I should send them to Ryton with some sandwiches and a flask of tea  ;)

Thanks again
Kindest regards
Tracey

Hi Tracy

Send your parents to Heworth as there are families there.

The William Blackbird (c.1845) census info I sent I can now add further details. He married Jane Bowron (GRO: 1864 William Blackbird & Jane Bowron. Gateshead Vol 10a pg 853 Dec qtr) and their eldest daughter Mary Elizabeth Bowron Blackbird married Adam Brown Makepeace (GRO: 1901 Adam Brown Makepeace & Mary Elizabeth B Blackbird. Gateshead Vol 10a pg 1433 Dec qtr)

Hi Tracy

Send your parents to Heworth as there were your families there who were butchers so they can have some decent pies or pasties rather than sandwiches.

The William Blackbird (c.1845) census info I sent I can now add further details. He married Jane Bowron (GRO: 1864 William Blackbird & Jane Bowron. Gateshead Vol 10a pg 853 Dec qtr) and their eldest daughter Mary Elizabeth Bowron Blackbird married Adam Brown Makepeace (GRO: 1901 Adam Brown Makepeace & Mary Elizabeth B Blackbird. Gateshead Vol 10a pg 1433 Dec qtr)

The Makepeace family where also butchers in the Heworth/Felling area and are linked to the Haddon Grave in St Mary's Church, Heworth.  I have posted an entry on this subject in the Forum.

No doubt I will probably find more with that unusual surname.
Excuse earlier unfinished message - finger problem.

Thanks Keith  ;D

I remember asking my Grandad about rationing during the war and him saying that they did okay for meat as there were butchers in the family.

He had a cousin Bill in the Felling area. I assume this must be them. Yet another William Blackbird  ;D ;D ;D

I know I keep saying this - but every time I move onto another part of my family - the Blackbird`s pop back up and I get more info. Which is brilliant as they were what started this addiction !!

Hi there,

This is an old thread I'm aware, but I come from the Blackbird's too. The farthest back I've managed to get is to my 8th Great Grandfather, Matthew Blackbird baptised September 9th, 1666 in Newburn, Northumberland. He married Eleanor Kirkup on the 28th of May, 1692 at St Andrew's Newcastle. I come from their son Matthew baptised 2nd June 1706 at St John, Newcastle who married Jane Wild November 11, 1730. Then their son, another Matthew - baptised September 5th 1731 at Ryton, Durham. He married Mary Wilson 2nd February 1757 and they had Elizabeth Blackbird born in Tanfield, Durham in 1759.
