does anyone know how I could begin to trace my g gran who was born  ballyjamesduff 1858  or so we are told . her name was Margaret Griffin.

You could try the 1911 census to see if you can spot anything useful.

thanks to hallmark and aghadowey but I failed to mention that she moved to scotland by 1871 and died there so the 1901 census only says Ireland and the 1811 is not available in Scoland so it has to be some Irish record.

1901 census is 1st complete census for all Ireland. Only small fragments of earlier years for a few areas still exist. If you check the links in CAVAN RESOURCES you'll see that there are no sensus records for the period you need.

Usually the alternative is to see if church records exist.
