Title: Jersey look up please 1811 - Bashford
Post by: reay on Monday 18 January 10 18:21 GMT (UK)
Hi

Would someone be able to help me with information on Barbara Bashford who was born in Jersey in 1811.  I have no details on where she was born in Jersey, or who her parents were.  She did, however, end up living in Kent.

Any help on how I can go about finding out more about her would be appreciated.

Hi

I can see a baptism in St Helier Parish Church, 31st May 1811 for Barbara Story Bashford. Parents  were listed as Thomas Bashford and Hannah Bashford. This is unusual as it normally lists the mother's maiden name. It could be that they in some, related.

God-parents were George Gaillard, Francoise Le Gallais and "said mother".

Hi Stewart

Thank you very much for that information, that could well turn out to be the lead I require.  May I ask did you have access to all parish records when looking up the information, or was it just St Heliers?  Not sure how it all works.

Thanks once again.

I just 'googled' and found a website which mentions Barbara Bashford.  It gives her 1829 marriage details to a Mr Dibley in Kent and their children.

Maybe it is your own website and you have this information already?  The site does not give Barbara's Jersey details though, simply that she was born in Jersey in 1812.

I could not find any Bashford's on the 1841 Jersey Census or on Major Don's Muster List of 1815.

I checked out the LDS Family Search Website and there is a Thomas Bashford marrying a Hannah Ashby on 31st December 1802 Speldhurst in Kent - with the Dibley's having the Speldhurst connection, I wondered if this was the 'connecting' information?.

Just a thought.  Hope it helps.

Hi Sally

I checked all Parishes. They are all paper and each Parish has its own index. There are chances that I've missed something (as the writing is so small), but I try my  best.

Thanks Historyfan.  The Barbara Bashford you found on google is my relative, she married Richard Dibley, who got transported to Tasmania for stealing silver, leaving her behind with 2 children in Speldhurst.  Intrigued as to how she ended up in England having been born in Jersey.  Managed to buy two huge volumes on the Dibleys from a Canadian couple who spent 20 odd years researching the Dibleys.  Now I want to find out more about Barbara Bashford.

If Thomas and Hannah Bashford who married in Speldhurst Kent in 1802 turned out to be Barbara's parents, that could explain her return to England.

I wonder if her father was in the Military and was posted to Jersey at some point?  This could explain her being born in Jersey and only there for a short time.

I was only reading a book about the transportations to Australia and Tasmania recently.  Life was very hard during those years and some of the reports from Tasmania were the harshest in treatment of prisoners.

Yes, that was what I was thinking.  There must be some military lists for that era, but not sure where to look.

I don't know if this helps, but both Josiah Bashford, born Speldhurst 1792 and his brother James born  Speldhurst 1786 both saw military service.  They were two of the children of Thomas Bashford and Sarah Garner.
Josiah's records are at the Public Records Office at Kew.
