Hi to the list
I also have a puzzle and hoping SKS may be able to shed some light or point me in a direction for an answer as I haven't had any success unravelling this myself yet.
My grandmother Sarah Elisabeth [nee Jones] WILLIAMS, was buried St Peter's Church Cockett, June 16th 1947. Grave 97A, Section SW.
Much to my amazement, I was advised there is a gent interred in the same grave and I have not yet been able to discover any family connection.
The gent is a David Samuel JONES [38] of Abercarni, Pentregethin Road, Swansea who was buried 6 days earlier on June the 6th 1947.
Other than the fact that my grandmother's maiden name was Jones, and this gent's name is also Jones, I haven't been able to discover any family connection yet so am wondering if anyone has any siggestions/thoughts on where to look to discover more about this gent and try to identify him/a link with my family.
I am attaching a newspaper clipping but it doesn't shed any light.....
Cheers.... Lynda

Contact the cemetary office for confirmation of grave plot, my g/gran was shown on a receipt as being in one grave, but on visiting grave she certainly was not there, spoke to the office & they told exactly where she was, nowhere near the other grave & with no marker, so my original journey would have been just a useless even if she had been there!!

Two possible births - neither in Glamorgan
Births December qtr 1908
David Samuel Jones Bedwelty 11a 96
Births March qtr 1909
David Samuel Jones Aberayron 11b 32
A copy of his death cert may give a clue but no guarantees
Where and when was Sarah born?
-
thanks for such quick responses - I guess RootsChat really is a 'city that does not sleep'! :-)
Plummiegirl -- I live in NZ so if you by some chance have an email contact for the Registrar at the cemetary, I could email them to ask for a double check of the details and see where that gets me.
Carol - thanks for the two options -- I'll follow up on those and see if I can find anything. I'm actually struggling for exact date of when Gran was born so that I can order birth cert for her and confirm her mother's name.
Although I have her death cert, that narrows the year of birth but there are so many with similar names that I still can't be sure which one to order, especially as I am not 100% certain of her mam's maiden name - with the NZ exchange rate the way it is, I'm loathe to splash out unless I can be a bit more certain which one she is. It is likely to be around 1910/1911 and in the Burry Port area.

Hi Lynda,
If you want to check, this website has a "Contact us" bit. As you know I was with Dave when he looked on the computer for this grave and I don't think it's an error, but you never know.

Do you have Sarah with her family on the 1911 census? The number of years married may help you work out her parents' marriage unless their first names are also really common.
The only birth registration for a Sarah E Jones around the right time and in the right district for Burry Port looks to be
Sarah Enid E Jones march qtr 1909 Llanelly vol 11a pg 1287
There are no plain Sarahs without middle initial
You could ask the registrar if the father on this birth record matches the father's name on the marriage cert you have
registrarsatcarmarthenshire.gov.uk replacing at with @
The volume and page number won't mean anything to the registrar but you can tie it down to the 3 months of the quarter.

If Sarah's parents were Charles and Sarah Jane, then in the 1911 census she was 1 month old and was the only child at the home with her parents. Dad was a dock labourer and they had been married for 4 years, living at 28 Watkin Street, Swansea.
??? the right one?

I have just re-read your 1st email, now I am wondering if this was a public grave?
They are usually very large & deep. X amount of people buried 1 day, these coffins covered over with about 1 foot of earth ready for the next lot!!
This could explain the 10 days difference.
Am off now to see if I can find some info on the church, will be back later today or tomorrow (if I can find a phone number for the church will give them a call, if you don't ask you don't get. I have the cheek of the devil!!)

-

I eagarly await the result of your call.......
-
Hi It is just after 12pm on Monday - have called the rectory got an answer phone & another number to try - got another answer phone. Very busy parish
Will try again this evening.
I will NOT give up - like a dog with a bone!!!
-
hehheee... nothing quite like a family researcher with a clue in sight eh?!
-
Well it is now 19.38pm - have called again - got the anwerphone - have left a message -you have now become my cousin our grannies were sisters!! Well if he thought I was not related he might not call back.
Have asked him to call back tomorrow after midday (am out am). O/H in bed, he's a postman & hates the phone going off after he's fallen asleep. He closes his eye, breathes in about twice & hey presto he is fast asleep, wish I could go off that easily.
I am determined to get somewhere here!!
-
hehhee..... not all bad if he goes off to sleep that quickly.... gives you time to indulge your hobby without interference eh... My O/H is always telling me how late it is and do I realise how tired I'll be in the morning etc... and they say women nag......
By the way 'cuz' :-)) I'm told today our grandpa/grandma, are also buried in same graveyard 'somewhere' so if you do get through to them, would you ask for any details they may have on Evan JONES and Catherine/ Katherine Jane JONES [nee Thomas] who died between 1947-1954 please . ?
I understand they were both living at 14 Page Street at time of death [same as my Nana] but as their names are quite 'common', I haven't been able to accurately identify BMD data to order a certificate as yet so if they can find both in the Church register, tnat would be awesome indeed....
-
Right - it is now 19.37 Tues. still nothing back - so have called again & listened to the answerphone message again
I can contact the office tomorrow between 9am - 1pm so will try again then
If not would you be prepared to wait a little while and I can sent a letter to see if I can get the info that way.
By the way if you google St. Peters Church, Cockett there is a lovely photo of the church, not a lot of useful info.
It is now an Evangelical Church.
-
cripes -- what a mission this is turning into! Thanks ever so much for all your help -- If anyone ever needs anything looked up/checked/photographed here in Christchuch NZ, you only need to let me know and I'm there!
There's no frantic rush at all only curiosirty on my part to be able to understand the connection and how they ended up in same grace so as/when you have the opportunity would be wonderful.
Many thanks!

:D DANCES ROUND THE ROOM :D
Contacted the Sextant, David Machin, a very lovely old man, he has all the records on computer which makes access easier, he was more than happy to help.
David Samuel Jones is in grave SW97 he died 6 June 1947
Grave 97a is a totally different grave, so she is not buried with either a relative or a stranger!!!
Catherine/Katherine Jane Jones (nee Thomas) died age 65 of Page Street, BURIED 25 April 1949, date of death not shown. Burial Record Ref: L280 Grave: SEF 38
In same grave
Evan Jones died age 69 of Mill Cottage, Achddu, Millport, Buried 3 April 1950, date of death again not shown.
Had Catherine & Evan not been in same grave would never have found them, living different addresses & Evan Jones is a very popular name in the records, even during the 1947-54 timespan given.

So, not what he told me when I was standing next to him! >:(
-
and not the burial Lynda was looking for. She was trying to trace Sarah Elizabeth Williams who was buried 16/6/1947.
???
-
The names & dates were sent via a pm, she added the last 2 names, with a date range of 1947 - 1954 & the address of Page Street was the one she supplied.
-
many thanks to everyone for their suggesitons and asistance and to you Plummiegirl for your persistance in chasing the information down for me. :-*
BevBee -- poor old Dave really caused some confusion for us with the 'stranger' in the grave eh but the plot numbers are so close together I can understand how he could have confused it eh.
as you can guess, I'll be in touch re a possible photo for the grandparents if you get the chance to head out that way some time :-) !! :D
-
No problem - as soon as I can get up there. :)
