can anyone please help me with any information about a pub called the pennywell, portsmouth road, sunderland?
i can find the road but nothing about the pub itself.
my late father in law, robert hull morgan was the licencee there up until november 1969 when he died.
i would be grateful of any information that anyone can give me.
many thanks for reading this.

I think you mean "The Eagle" that was at the corner of Portsmouth Road/Parkhurst Road and was demolished about 1996. If you go to http://gis.durham.gov.uk/website/interMAP/viewer.htm and enter the post code SR49DB in search you will see where it was between the Community Centre and Medical Center.

"The Eagle" was a Nimmo house and opened on 11th March 1959. After lying derelict it became a target for arson attacks and was eventually demolished in October 1996.
From "Sunderland Public Houses" by Alan Brett, in which there is a photograph of the pub.

hello stan,
thankyou for your reply.
all i can go by is a death certificate which gives this name of the pub and the address dated 1969.
i had a great aunt who came from this area who said she remembered it, but she is sadly no longer with us for me to quiz her more about it.
i shall go onto the links that you have given me and have a look.
many thanks for your help.

The name of the pub could have originally been The Pennywell but was changed to The Eagle after 1969,
there was no other pub in that area.

I used to live near this area at the time you are talking about, and I can't remember a pub called the Pennywell. I certainly remember the Eagle pub mentioned in the other replies, which was at the end of the row of shops on Portsmouth Road and near the comprehensive school. I can't remember any other pubs on Portsmouth Road either.

In the 1983 Telephone Directory both The Pennywell and The Eagle, are listed.( I should have checked it first >:( )It seems that The Pennywell for some reason is not listed in "Sunderland Public Houses" published 2003, was it closed by then?

the pennywell is now some sort of social services building the eagle was knocked down along with the shops. the shops in the middle of the cresent just to the south of acadamy 360 (pennywell school).the pennywell sold vaux bear and i think the eagle was either scottish and newcasle or witbread.now there is no pubs or clubs in pennywell the nearerest pubs are the grindon mill on chester road and pennywell comrades but this is in south hylton at the top of hylton bank.i think both pubs shut because the lack of trade and they were no go areas for all but the regulers.

hi stan and neil,
once again thankyou!
this link is fascinating, still not sure which building is which as there are a couple that look as if they could be official offices or something with car parks.
i did imagine that the pennywell would look something like the picture of the eagle (but intact and with a roof! lol!) but as i dont know this area at all it could have looked like anything.

If you change the view to looking south you can see the front of the building facing on to Porchester Road, with the white roofed building behind.

There was a pub called the pennywell. It was a vaux pub and it was opposite the eagle at the other side of the green field.
The eagle was at the end of the row of shops on Portsmouth road and my parents ran it from 1976 to 1982

Hi Tina
A bit surprised that others cant remember the Pennywell Inn as it definitely existed (I know as I used to drink there) at the junction of Portsmouth Road and Porchester Road.
Actually, the original modernised building is still there but it is now used as a Springboard training centre.
The Eagle pub used to stand directly across the central grassed horseshoe shaped area where the new Pennywell Shopping Centre now stands. It was the Pennywell Inn that was a Nimmo (and later a Vaux) house and the Eagle was actually a Whitbread house. The Pennywell Inn was not renamed to the Eagle as a previous poster has suggested, they were 2 distinct and separate pubs that existed together for many years.
Hope this helps
Bill

yes thats totally right the springboard centre right on the corner of portchester/portsmouth rd was the former pennywell inn, which roy george & bridget ran for years, bridget may of been irish or scotch it was one of those,i know coz we used to stand in one of doorways, roy would come & chase us so we'd go to the door at the other end, there also used to be an off licence in the middle but stopped being ,the pennywell inn doorways was used by many courting teenagers to stand around in,the Hut which was a playscheme ran by big eric & jan his wife were straight opposite the pennywell inn, which is now where the business park stands, spent man hours around both only living 1 or 2 streets away x
