Hi Jim
Just in case you don't have it, it appears that he may be in the Stratford upon Avon area 1871 census:
Edward SPARKES lodger unm 26 travelling musician b.Chichester Sussex.
He was with a number of other travelling musicians so must have been part of a band/group - Stephen LYONS 24 b.Chichester, Annie LYONS wife 25 b.Chichester, George WILKINSON 35 b.Yorkshire, William H ORDER 23 b.Suffolk, Thomas LONSDALE 27 b.Lancashire, Frederick CAILSON/CAITSON 32 b.Jersey.
They were at the "Horse & Jockey", 38 Wood St.

Would make sense if he was a bugler in the Sussex Militia :) Looking at the dates, I would think that was just before his marriage, so marriage after 2 April 1871 (when the census was taken) but probably before 1874 when his son was born. That should help you Jim to narrow things down.

Jim,
If you don't get a reply to your 1841, 1851, 1861 request on this thread, try posting a new message, with a bold subject heading, like, 1841, 1851, 1861 CHICHESTER, someone should pick it up.
