Title: Anything cheaper than 192.com? Suggestions appreciated!
Post by: IgorStrav on Tuesday 16 February 10 15:18 GMT (UK)
Hello all

I'm doing some research tracking down living relations, and have spent £34.95 for credits on 192.com, which has produced some success stories.

However, I've now come across a couple of entries which require Premium membership for me to read completely and I can see that this costs £150 PLUS the cost of the credits.

Am I missing a trick here, is there anywhere else where I can search similar info - non listed telephone numbers/electoral registers - more cheaply?

thanks for any suggestions.

 :)

IgorStrav,
"short and curlys" come to mind.
I have had the same experience as you.
You might like to have a look at Linked In, which is a networking tool for professional folk, you could try a name search on their front page:
http://www.linkedin.com
I am not sure if there is any subscription fee.
In addition, I also use Facebook as a handy aid for current day folk.
Cheers
Dave

Findmypast does have them as well  (poswered by 192 so they say) and it costs 10 credits a look - you can buy 280 credits for £24.95 or 60 credits for £6.95

I've not done the sums to see if it's worth your while  :)

Hi Gadget,
yep, that's right, you can go through Findmypast + as part of their subscription...and then you still get to the 192 Premium Membership gate.
192.com have got all the angles sussed!

I have to say that I used that option on FindMyPast before christmas

Can I make a suggestion if you are going to use 192 keep the search base fairly wide ie just a surname and a town
this option gave me eight names in the same area but the full name just gave me one.  Not sure how that would work with a very common name though

Hi,
I have been using 'UK Electoral Roll' which cost me £3.25 for a months membership, unlimited
searches using full name. There are other options if you don't have the full name or want to search
address only, or surname only etc. mostly at £3.25 a month......search as many times as you like.
Also provide a years package for electoral roll and BMD's for £59.25.
I only use this for electoral roll and took out a month's membership only yesterday, giving me
immediate access.......far cheaper than 192.com which I think is very pricey.

oh so do I.

Found another rellie, too.

Although searching for relatively common names, when not being able to add middle initial, and not sure of location.....and then trying to match addresses with known spouses (fingers crossed not divorced in the meantime).....when addresses don't seem to be in any alphabetical order.......

grateful, but boggle eyed  ;)  ;)  ;)

Alyson - What years does the electoral roll cover?  Can it be used to find people in the 1940s/50s for instance?

Hi,

I'm not sure if anyone's still interested. But I found this thread so maybe someone else is looking for the answer as well.

If you want something completely free - try www.bt.com ~ http://www.btexchanges.com/eg-smith/eg-bradford-or-bd1.search?type=residential

You search by surname and area. You can find where the person is living on 192, and then put their surname and place into bt and it comes up with phone number and address.

Not everyone's on though, however, I have found dozens of cousins and other relations so far.

Good luck!

Thanks, C V-S, that looks a good option, and I'll give it a try.

I had a spate of looking for living relatives, wrote to a few with a polite letter, enclosing sae, with no response whatsoever, so that discouraged me.

However, shouldn't be discouraged, I'd be really pleased to get a reply from just one!

Don't forget that, for quite a few years now, we have had the option to opt of of the electoral register as far as databases such as 192.com are concerned. We can vote but our data is not sold on to sales & marketing companies who may want to send offers because I've been specially selected to receive them.

I'm not listed at 192.com but I have the vote.

I'm also ex-directory so you won't find me in the phone book.

If you're trying to find someone in the electoral registers, try here

http://www.searchelectoralroll.co.uk/Electoral_Roll_Search.asp

(as long as they haven't opted out - I have)

This is from People Trace online

People Trace Online - Online resource for tracing names and addresses of UK citizens via the Electoral Register.

Hi

There are other services available, some on a "no find, no fee" basis.

Basically, if it is important and if you value the information . . . . .

If you are carrying out the search as part of your business / to earn money
then the cost is (almost certainly) "UK tax deductible".
If you are just trying to obtain the information at zero cost then the services are not for you.

Thanks for replies.... i bit the bullet and used them:

www.peopletraceonline.co.uk/tsearch.php

You can search before you buy same as 192com, so already knew they had the person in their database.

Much cheaper than 192 and peopletracer.

😁😁

I was searching for the address of someone recently and put their name into Google, it brought them up on Yell (the old yellow pages).  Of course that will only work if they are in business, in the case of the person I was looking for he is a farmer, so his home address is also his business address.  Then I went onto google streetmap to look at his home and, believe it or not, he was actually standing on his drive when google drove down his road.  Back view only unfortunately.

Had he been facing the camera Lizzie, he would have been blurred. This happened to our son in Birmingham a few years back.

Roger

I didn't think about that, I guess Google blurs the faces, although I've just been looking on google maps as I have to go to a house soon that is on an estate which is difficult to find your way round and the numbering makes no sense at all, and there was a young Asian lady standing on the footpath doing something with her mobile 'phone.  Her face wasn't blurred.

Lizzie

ps.  I found an up to date photo of the man in question, his daughter had posted a video on Facebook of her wedding.   ::)

I was visible on Google until recently, walking along a busy shopping street in Woodbridge, Suffolk.  No faces were blurred in that shot.  Can't check at the moment, but I think there's an updated image now.
