Title: Visiting the Isle of Man
Post by: SAM100 on Wednesday 17 February 10 22:54 GMT (UK)
Good Morning,
I am planning on visiting the Isle of Man in early May.
I would like to locate the graves of my gggrandparents (if they have headstones) at St Mary's Church in Castletown and also look at parish records , if they are available to view.
Can anyone advise me as to how I should go about this.

Thank you :)

St   Mary's   church   in   Castletown  did   not   have   a   graveyard.  It was  a town  centre/   military  church  for
the  nearby  barracks  for   Castle  Rushen.  People   were   buried   at   Malew  in   the   parish  church graveyard.
[The   building  still   stands  but   is  now  an  office  building.]   Can   you   give   names  &   approximate   dates ??

Thank you for your prompt reply :)

John Thompson (born 1820, Co Fermanagh, Ireland) came to the Isle of Man around 1854 with the 41st Regiment of Foot.
In the 1861 census he is  listed  in the Civil Parish or Township of Conchan with his wife Bridget and 5 children (2 of whom were born in Ireland)

Bridget Thomson (note that the p has been dropped) died in 1869 and was buried 22 September 1869, address The Green Castletown.

John Thompson was buried on 6 April 1898, address, Castletown.

My great grandfather, John Thompson was christened at St Mary's Church, Castletown 24 July 1861.

Are the parish records available for viewing?

I am very excited about my forth coming trip and looking forward to visiting all of the places where my ancestors lived. :) :)

Burials  at  Malew  as   you  stated.  I   did   not   seem   to   be   able   to   find   any   headstones   &  MI's  in   the
index  in  Manx  Museum  Library  in   Douglas. You  will  be  able  to  find  details  of  the   Regiments  posted  to  IOM.
Films  are   available  of   Parish  record copies   in  the  library   also  available  to  order /rent  from   LDS  / Mormon
Family  History  Centres.
I   could   not  find  the  baptism  /  will  have  another  try on  next   visit.
Re   Douglas  census  [in   parish  of   Onchan ]  1861 Duke  Lane  was  a  cul de sac  now  demolished  near  Duke St.
then the  main shopping street  in Town near Market &  Quayside, which still  exists. Douglas  became  the  Capital  in
1869   until  then  it  was  Castletown  where  there  are  many  buildings  from  that  era   whether  preserved as
museums  or   houses  &   the   church  building  already  mentioned.

The parish registers were  officially copied in 1911 (civil reg started only in 1877) the films of this copy can be borrowed at any Mormon FHC - or consulted at Manx Museum library (opening hours 10am-5pm Mon thru Sat) - the original registers are not generally available however they are currently being filmed (by the mormons I think) - a new Ancestry centre (an offshoot of Museum) opens very late in 2010 (?november ? early 2011) and it is planned that the digital images of these films can be seen there.

I have info re Regiments stationed on IoM at http://www.manxnotebook.com/history/military/regts.htm

I was very interested to hear that digital images of IoM parish registers may be available soon.  I am searching for information regarding a g g grandparent, Robert Hilliard Smith, who was baptised at St Mary's Castletown on 16 February 1834 and buried at Malew on 3 February 1903.  Any information regarding the baptismal entry or the existence of a headstone/MI would be very much appreciated.  He spent a period in the army (13th Light Infantry) and then lived in Ireland before returning to Castletown.  His address in the 1901 census was 36, Derbyhaven Road.  At the time of his death on 31 January 1903 he was living at The College Green.

The official copy of the register available on Mormon microfilm is excellent - will give  all info you want.
To check for an MI post query at http://www.isle-of-man.com/cgi-bin/interests/genealogy/bulletin/index.pl?noframes; as a regular poster there has complete collection of IoMFHSoc MI books

College green and Derbyhaven road might be same address - the road runs past the back entrance to King Williams college to debryhaven - see http://www.manxnotebook.com for derbyhaven + castletown
