Title: Cowing/Moffat
Post by: Nahtahleeah on Saturday 20 February 10 01:57 GMT (UK)
I'm looking for anything on Thomas Cowing but I know nothing of him except he married Sarah Moffat in Durham County 28/12/1805.
Sarah was born in Stanhope 1780 and died 1861 in Eastington ??? Durham.
Her parents were William Moffat and Jane Atkinson.

Could their be a different variation of Cowing? This guy is tough!  ;D

Hi Natalya,

Where did you find Sarah's death?  If we could pinpoint Eastington she should be on at least the 1851 census.  The only death on free BMD in that year is in Lambeth.

Cheers

Natalya have you searched Cowin & Cowan?

Never heard of an Eastington in Durham do you mean Easington?

Cheers

This is their marriage from the Bishops Transcripts (page 228)

Stanhope

Thomas Cowing of the parish of Lanchester & Sarah Moffatt of this parish married by banns 2/12/1805.  Witnesses were Thos Arkless & Sarah Willey.

So in 1805 Thomas was living in the parish of Lanchester but was not necessarily born there.

Where were their children baptised, you may find additional information on their baptisms i.e. John Smith 1st son of John Smith native of Nowhere by his wife Elizabeth late White native of No Place.

Well i've found one child of their in the Tanfield BT's (page 217)

John Cowing born 23/11 at Tanfield baptised 8/2/1807 1st son of Thomas Cowing, labourer, a native of Stanhope parish, by his wife Sarah Moffit, a native of the same parish.

So your next step is to find a likely baptism for Thomas at Stanhope.

If your not aware of the site I found this on here's the link

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#c=1309819;s=waypointsOnly;w=0;p=waypoint

They aren't indexed so you need to search page by page.

Hi Natalya,

I came across this site by chance earlier today while looking into my paternal family ancestry. I believe my 6 times grandfather was William Moffatt born 1725 in Stanhope. His son William was born in 1750 & married Jane Atkinson in 1778 again in Stanhope. Their daughter Sarah was born in 1780 & married Thomas Cowling in 1805. I cannot find anything on Thomas either but I am waiting to hear from the Family History Department of Stanhope Museum regarding any info that they may have on the 1725 William. Once they respond I'll ask if they have any information on Thomas Cowing. Best wishes from not so sunny Kent, England.
