Hi,
Can anyone point me to a Manchester street plan online, or one to purchase, for the era of about 1900,
with a street index.
I am looking for Duke Street, North West Manchester, St.John's Ward, St.Mathews Ecclesiastical Parish
this full address was taken from the 1901 census.
I have been told that there were 2 or 3 Duke Streets in Manchester and the one i am looking for is probably no
longer in existence.
I am particularly interested to find out if it is near to the Irwell canal.
Thanks
Al
sorry - that should be the Irwell River, or better still the River Irwell.

hi ShaunJ,
Thank you for the link to the map - that is definitely the street, because i see in the 1861 census for the same family it is given as
Duke Street, Deansgate, Manchester.
The family (Entwistle) were Watermen/Flats on the River Mersey/Irwell -, in the early 1800's they were in Latchford (Nr. Warrington)
then they moved to Manchester. So i was assuming that they were still employed on the river - just at a different location.
I can see that the Irwell and even the Bridgewater Canal are close-by.
I have been reading how the Mersey was altered by providing weirs and locks to make it navigable (at low tide) in the 1720's.
Can anyone recommend a book to read about the life of Watermen on the river Mersey/Irwell and maybe some of the history.
thanks
Al

Re Duke st, Try looking fo directions to Alberts Shed, near Liverpool Rd and the science museum. Duke St is very near , I went to a wedding reception there and at the same time, I went to see where I was born. incidentally at the bottom of duke st is the Irwell Canal or river and its arches. Hope this will be helpful. Tevlinden
