My earliest ancestor in the US was Thomas COLLYER in Charles City County, VA, US circa 1634 and thence to Surry County, VA, US. It is believed that he was born circa 1600 in Surrey, England. He may have been in VA as early as 1623. I'm searching for any information that could confirm his birth in England and passage to the US. He likely had a brother named Edward. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Larry, welcome to Rootschat
I don't know if this could be him, or if it is too late. All baptised Pirbright Surrey and all with father Robert. No mother given.

Jan,
I appreciate your speedy reply. However, I don't think that the family you reported is correct. Earlier research indicated that that Thomas COLLYER died in 1616 (I Think) in Surrey. My Thomas was in the US in at least 1634 so probably not the same Thomas. I believe the Thomas you reported was the son of Robert COLLYER, who also died in Surrey. Would you have any evidence that the Thomas you reported didn't die in 1634 or wasn't the son of Robert? Or that he came to the US? Maybe a passenger list? At any rate, thanks!

Jan,
My mistake I typed that your reported Thomas died in 1634 should have been 1616. Also agreed that he was Robert's son.

Sorry Larry, no to all of those :'( I only have access to the Surrey baptisms, and that was the only one I could see that fitted. At least it eliminates that entry.
Good luck anyway

My Collier's (the earliest Thomas Colley/Collyer/Collier) were already in the US by ca 1623 and haven't been able to establish where they came from. I'm fairly certain that it was somewhere in Surrey, most likely Witley, Pirbright or Chiddingfold areas. Consequently, no connection to ancestors in the UK. I believe that the Collier's you mention are in a different line from mine. Thanks for the reply anyway.

Robert Collyer of Pirbright lists all his children including Thomas and Edward in his will dated May 1616, so Thomas was alive then. There is no record in Pirbright of a Thomas being buried in 1616.

Brian,
So good to get your reply to my query. Is there any way for me to get a copy or transcript of that will? I'm not sure why I believed that Thomas died in 1616. You also mention that there is no mention of Thomas dying in Surrey. Is there some sort of register that carries that sort of information? Also, if this Thomas did come to Virginia, what would be the most likely port for him to embark from? Any thoughts on the ship that would have been used? Anyway, thanks for your input.

Hi Larry,
Robert Collyer/Collier is my 9th great grandfather, he was born in 1574 in Pirbright Surrey England, married in 1600 to Margaret Lee/Allee at St Michaels church Pirbright Surrey (Robert married aged 26) and Robert died again in Pirbright Surrey in 1616.
He was a tailor and must have been wealthy as I have a picture of him painted holding a pair of scissors and looking very handsome in his Elizabethan 1st period costume. Also on my ancestry family tree I have 2 certificates..one of them is his baptism and one of his marriage written in Elizabethan writing which is difficult to read.
He had children and this is what my ancestors information says ~
Henry 1606 - 1677
Thomas 1608 27th Nov (Baptism) - Died in Virginia (usa)
Edward 1616 - ?
I found out on another site about collier family history that said a Thomas Collier settled in Hingham, Massachusetts in 1635 and there was political and religious disarray in England at the time that made the far away New World an attractive prospect. On cramped disease ships, thousands migrated to british colonies that would become Canada and the USA.
So maybe that is our Thomas Collier? also I noticed on other peoples public trees that this Thomas Collier from Pirbright Surrey uk had a wife Susanna in the states.
Regards,
Susan Waughman (nee Collyer)
