Post by: johnrs on Tuesday 09 March 10 16:46 GMT (UK)
thank you teaurn (great name), for your reply, I am trying to find my
fathers father, william stoker sands, both of the same name. found
on 1911 census as w s not w s s living in newburn, gateshead. it has
my dad and his sisters on and gives his birthplace as spittal teasing,
newcastle. there is a spittal in berwick, think there is a spittal in newcastle.?  found a record of a marriage to ann nixon in 1882 in gateshead reg-office and a 2nd marriage in 1898 to a mary jane callaghan st domonics church, newcastle. can not find william or mary on any 1901 census.? my father was born sept  1901 in brass cottages, carrs hill, gateshead. after 4 years i found by using brass only on the march 1901 census a william and mary stoker and a john colligan. if my dad was born there where were his parents living.? any advice or help to solve this would be terrific. thanks. :)

hello johnrs and welcome to RootsChat .
You will find this site very friendly and helpful.
We have all been a newcomer at some point -so don't worry about your postings -the mods will helpfully move posts to the correct section if needed -and if there is more information needed I'm sure we will ask questions - so don't worry

There are a few "rules" we do not post details of the living/may be living/ recently deceased - for such reasons as identity theft etc.

We are not allowed to do9 look ups of 1911 census -copyright issues

Enjoy

Hi

If you have found a William and Mary STOKER at the critical address in 1901, I'd think it likely that (in the absence of any other candidates) they are the same people as the William and Mary SANDS whose son, named William Stoker SANDS, was born at that address a few months later.

ETA: I've had a quick look at their details in 1901 (RG13/4749/152/57) and they seem to be a good match for the people you're looking for.

Anna :)

Hi johnrs,

It would appear that looking at the census returns the family go by the Stoker name on more than one census.

I have learnt that family members seemed to use their names on a whim on each census, sometimes forget where they were born and even how old they were.

I have come to the conclusion they did it deliberately to confuse us poor family historians ;D ;D

thanks lizziew, maggie, suzard, and anna for the replys. I am coming
to the conclusion that the william stoker and william stoker sands are
the person I was looking for as going by age on 1901 and 1911 census in particular giving how long married would be about right.
I could find one of the childrens birth certificate and see what parents  names are on that. the other thing I need to find is birth
date and place for W S S, it gives spittal teasing .? I assume this is
in newcastle.?  :)

Hi Johnrs,

I have found a place called Spital Tongues in Newcastle but I cannot find a spittal teasing.

With regard to William Stoker Sands.  I am coming up blank. lots of William Stoker or William Stokoe(as per second name on the marriage list) but no Sands for the right date.

Might be best to send of for the marriage cert to see what comes back.

thanks teaurn, have just got a marriage cert for william stokoe sands and mary jane callaghan, st domonics catholic church, newcastle, both at same add.2 gordon road, n/castle, william aged 39.? and mary 28, farther thomas sands deceased, marys john callaghan. think this is correct as date is 26 oct 1898, this would give about 14 yr to 1911 census which is what they say on that. also found john and jane callaghan with a daughter mary in carlisle in 1881, think the 1901 census for brass cottages the colligan should be callaghan and living at same place as mary jane and william. also found christening record for william stoker sands (father thomas) 28 nov' 1852 but not a birth record. wish I could find this.!

The sums don't add up for 1852 as the 1911 show born 1861.
Even going by they marriage cert of age 39 in 1898 that would make his birth around 1858

With regard to the birth reg I have a 3x grandfather was baptised but not registered. Well! not that I have not ever found. Seems in the early days there was some confusion about regulations and some were either baptized or registered.

found a william sands near spittal tounge, one year old in 1861 at  pilgrim street (near barras bridge and haymarket) all saints n/castle, but not a reference number to get birth cert. it gives father as willam (wood turner) if this is son of thomas he was a cabinet maker so could be right, they say his wife was claranda? and a daughter called
isabella, my dad had a sister clorinda born in newburn and a sister called isabella, could be on the right track.?

Who are the witnesses to this marriage- often useful siblings of the bride and groom.

You really need to start with what you know(1901?) and work backwards.

thanks carol, one of the wittnesses was a bridget callaghan who is listed in 1881 census as another daughter so I am sure her side of
the family is correct. on my last post I thought  thomas was a cabinet maker but this was marriage cert in 1898. have now found marriage cert for willam stoker sands first marriage to ann nixon in 1882 in reg office, gateshead father again given as thomas (deceased) which seems to be right.

So if he's in Gateshead in 1882- then you should be able to get him, on the 1881?
