Not good is it? Looks like it starts with a 'T' ...  :-\

Can you do some detective work by finding out who the daughters married?

[yes, it does look a bit like Smith, until you campare it with the other 'S's' on the document]

Scrap that - I think John Smith signed, so the signature would be in a different hand.

It looks to me like different handwriting (proportions quite different) - as though he's been asked to fill his name in above "Son in law".

thanks to everyone for trying I'm
sorry should have explained
I have tried to find children for this couple without success
so when I found the death cert and it had the son in law on it
I realised they must have had a daughter
but with a name like McLean its like looking for a needle in a haystack  ;D
thought if I found out his name I could track down a marriage for them

I think you're right AVM. I modified my previous comment before I saw your reply.  ;)

Elaine, have you traced the family through the censuses? What date is the d/c.

Thank you everyone for your help
I think it may be John Smith
I have just found children  for a Hugh McLean and a Mary Smith
in Greenock and the names fit with the witnesses on other marriage certs
so I think Mary Wylie may have been his second wife and John has said
son in law instead of stepson
once again thanks  ;D
