Title: Argyle St, Motherwell - any ideas?
Post by: JulzDS on Tuesday 30 March 10 20:18 BST (UK)
Hi

Does anyone have any idea where this street was? It' given as an address on the 1891 census. It's listed as being in the Dalziel parish and 2 of the male occupants (including the head of house) were coal miners.

Thanks
Julz

Hi Julz,

The National Library of Scotland website [nls.uk - under digital collections] has some old maps, but not one that I can see which provides details of streets in Motherwell.  There is a commercial 'old maps' site which can also be good for pinpointing old locations, but I've had a look there and can't see Argyle Street either.

The best bet might be to contact Motherwell Heritage Centre to see if they have any old maps of Motherwell.  Their details are here:

http://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=15875

Depending on where you're based, you might be able to pop in.  If not give them a phone to see if they can help.  If they confirm that they have the maps, but can't send you a copy I might be able to pop in the week after next, as I am not too far away.

Let us know how you get on!

Best wishes

Rockford

I knew Argyle Street well, some of my schoolfriends lived there. It has long gone I'm afraid. It was a small dead-end street off Park Street, opposite the main entrance to Colville's steel works. The main Glasgow-London railway line was at the end of the street, it was a large cul-de-sac really, with tenements on either side. One of the buildings was called Grieve's Land, my great-grandfather lived there.
If you tell me the name of your ancestor I'll check if the family were there in the 1911 street directory.

Thanks guys.

Lodger - that's great thanks. I thought it could be around there as they lived on Leslie St for a time. The name was Rooney (Patrick and Maria) and their lodger John Lennon. I think they probably were on Leslie St by 1911 going by various docs.

Cheers
Julz

In the 1911 directory Mrs Maria Rooney is at 14 Leslie Street, no sign of Patrick. In the 1922-25 directory Patrick Rooney, contractor at 14b Leslie Street, also an H Rooney at that address and a J Rooney at 43 Leslie St.

Thanks Lodger, that's great.

I think Patrick may have been in America around then (for poor folks they went back and forth like yo-yos!!). H Rooney was probably Honora - Patrick's mother. No J's so far so will have a look into that

Thank you.

Hi long shot I know but I am researching David and Jane Paterson who lived in Argyle Street, Grieves land in the 1891 census. They are the parents of James Paterson b 1898 (Jane died 6 months after he was born and David remarried an Annie McKenzie in 1900). I noticed one of your research names was paterson, would David be your great grandfather?

Hi Alimully,

No David Paterson in my line (so far), sorry.

Hi Lodger - my grandfathers family  - the Dunnes, also lived on Argyle Street.   From what my papa remembered, the tenement he lived in was pretty much where Lamara's timber yard is (I think it's still there - I've not been to Motherwell for a while).

With your knowledge of the area do you happen to know anything about Borlands buildings?  My papa first lived there before moving to Argyle Street - as far as I can see they were slum tenements.  I think they were more towards Flemington but can't find any records of them.

Many thanks,

Suzywong.

Hi Suzy,
Borlands Building was part of Portland Square on the Beehive Brae, through Flemington Cross, under the railway bridge heading for Craigneuk. It would have been on the right-hand side going up, past Mrs Givens' pub (the Beehive). Just about opposite where Belhaven Church is now, only a little further down.
According to the 1925 directory, James Dunn, labourer lived at 364 (which would be the house number for Craigneuk Street probably).
William Borland had a grocer's shop there so I guess he owned the building.

Suzy,
My mistake - Borland's building was on the left side of the Beehive brae going up, near to where Belhaven Church is now.

FAO: Lodger.

This is a bit off topic, but i see that you have interests of McCallum from Oban and I also see some names that I am researching.

Would you be able to contact me? I am related to the McCallums from Oban, Perthshire & Dumbartonshire. I have done extensive research on them and don't think that i have come across your user name before.

I don't know if you are allowed to post your email address on this site, I got a warning for doing it around ten years ago but you can find me on my website or Facebook page "Historic Hamilton". Please feel free to send me a PM.

Regards,
Garry McCallum

Hi Garry, I just joined Historic Hamilton, tried to find your name but now I think that you ARE Historic Hamilton. An interesting page which I will post some pictures on when I have the time. We should be able to PM each other on this site once you have a couple more posts, so just keep replying to this one.

I am the American-born great granddaughter of Patrick & Maria Rooney's daughter Winifred. Honora was Winifred's sister.

Hello Inkeyfingers,
Welcome to Rootschat. The original poster of this topic hasn't been active on this forum for over five years now but, I have some information regarding the Rooney & Lennon families that I didn't have back in 2010 when the request by JulzDS was originally posted.
I have burial records from the Globe cemetery in Motherwell for 11 family members, adults and children,  If you are interested in this information please just reply here.
Best wishes, Lodger.

Hi Inkeyfingers,

All of the following records are for the Globe cemetery in Motherwell, it began life in 1876 and was originally named Dalziel Parish cemetery. It is now more or less abandoned although the civic authorities cut the grass twice a year, it is in a particularly difficult area to access and is/was prone to vandalism.
All dates are of interment.

MICHAEL ROONEY, 27 Argyle Street, aged 18 months.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 115. 1st December 1892.

AGNES ROONEY, 23 Argyle Street, aged 16 months.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 115. 16th May 1894.

HONOR CULLEN ROONEY, 14 Leslie Street, aged 60 years, widow.
Parents - Michael (Curran or Cullen) & Rose Kilmartin.
Plot CD 115. 5th June 1897.

LAWRENCE ROONEY, 14 Leslie Street, aged 20 months.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 116. 18th February 1898.

MARY ROONEY, 14 Leslie Street, aged 20 months.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 116. 7th March 1901.

MICHAEL LENNON, 14 Leslie Street, aged 68 years, widowed.
Parents - Dennis Lennon & Rosie Boyle.
Plot CD 114 & 115. 14th February 1905.

ELIZABETH ROONEY or MORGAN, housewife, Dalziel Street, aged 23 years, married.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 114 & 115. 5th October 1905.

ANNIE ROONEY, 14 Leslie Street, aged 1 year & 9 months.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Helen Conner.
Plot CD 114 & 115. 24th January 1906.

MARIA ROONEY, housewife, 14 Leslie Street, aged 63 years, married.
Parents - Michael Lennon & Elizabeth Coyle.
Plot CD 114 & 115. 22nd February 1924.

PATRICK ROONEY, retired, 298 Merry Street, aged 74 years, widowed.
Parents - Lawrence Rooney & Ona Cullen.
Plot CD 115. 15th March 1931.

DOROTHY ROONEY, schoolteacher, 288 Merry Street, aged 27 years, unmarried.
Parents - Patrick Rooney & Maria Lennon.
Plot CD 45. 4th August 1933.

I hope this information helps in some way. Plot 114 - 115 -116 was a big one, very unusual to see this in a "modern" cemetery, double plots are fairly common but triple ones are rare indeed.
I don't know why Dorothy wasn't interred with the rest of her family, the plot she is in was owned by a family by the name of Fairful. It may fit in somewhere perhaps.

Good luck with your research.  Lodger

The National Library of Scotland website [nls.uk - under digital collections] has some old maps, but not one that I can see which provides details of streets in Motherwell.
It's shown on the First Edition of the 25-inch Ordnance Survey map
