Title: Danish Immigrant - Grimsby 1891 - Petersen COMPLETED Tks to annie24b
Post by: liver007 on Friday 09 April 10 11:49 BST (UK)
I have tried tracing my G Grandfather on different Rootschat Forums over the years.  I am sorry if I seem to be duplicating work for any one.  I really do need help.

Peter Frederik (ck) Petersen came to the UK (Grimsby) as a fisherman from Denmark, in the 1901 census his country is listed as Denmark.   He was born abt 1873.  It looks as though he came to the port of Grimsby in  1891 he was abt 18, give or take a year.

He married Susan Balladry at St Johns church, Nee Clee Caistor on the 21 Oct 1896.

I have been contacted by people on the Faroe Islands who think that he came from the Islands.

I have searched the National Records and cannot find any documentation on him.

I really do need help on finding out if the authorities at the port of Grimsby would have taken/recorded any details on his entry into Grimsby at the time.

Would he have needed any documentation to stay in the UK.

I am desperately trying to link Peter to at least a town in Denmark/Faroe Islands so that I know that I am going down the right route.

If anyone needs clarification or more specific information please contact me.

Can any one please help !!!

Regards
Keith Hearn

This may be of some help.
There is a Peter Fred Petersen on the index of Grimsby sea fishing apprentices 1880-1937.
PETERSEN  Peter Fred 3 Oct 1891 208/1/8/167

The date is the date of indenture, & the numbers at the end refer to the registers, which are kept at the North East Lincolnshire Archives, in Grimsby .

Among the details included in the original registers are a boy’s birthdate, place of birth, next of kin, name of master and of first vessel, previous employment, and disciplinary record. Sometimes a note of a newspaper report – usually a court appearance – is added.

Annie,

I had seen it in the 1891 census and dismiised it, but you never know.
I have been in contact with Hanni in the Faroe Islands who thinks tha there is a connection with Peter Frederick Petersen.

He arrived in Grimsby in 1891 ?

I have sent an EMail to the Archives.

If you are happy to have a look at the apprectice records that would be great, do I owe you anything ?

If this Peter apprentice records show a home town of Vestmanna then he came from the Faroe Islands.

Fingers crossed either way, ie it will show where he was born and BOB.

Keith

Well, good news Keith (I think)

Details from the apprentice records:
Peter Fred Petersen
Date of Indenture 3 Oct 1891     Confirmation of indenture 15 Dec 1891
Date of birth: 8 Sept 1874  Place of birth : Faroe Islands
Bound for 4 yrs.
Place of lodging: 4 St Andrews Terrace, New Clee
Origin: Shipped in from Faroe Islands
Description:
Hair - light Eyes: Blue-grey  Height: 5' 9"
Ship: Pride of Essex.    Master : Robt. Starling
Name & address of any relation:
M(was difficult to read this, could be M, Mr or Mrs) Stromo, Faroe Islands
Reports (entered by the master)
15/12/91  VG
21/7/92 Still serving
2/9/92 very good
27/8/04 very good
21/12/94 very good

On 24 Sept 1892 he was transferred to a new master Weston Wm Crampin, ship Conisborough Castle (87799)
According to the person I spoke to in the Archives, he could have been transferred because Starling had gone out of business or simply had no work for him. Crampin was apparently a very well known ship owner.

On 8 Dec 1895 indenture given to lad

Hopefully this will link him to your contact in the Faroes

Annie,

How can I thank you.

This is good news, in fact great news.

It confirms that this Peter Frederick Petersen is my Great Grandfather.
I can now release the information I have to the people that have been in contact with me from the Faroe Islands.

Is'nt it funny for years I have been trying to make the connection to Denmark.
And in a couple of weeks it has been made.

I cannot thank you enough.

Regards
Keith

You're very welcome Keith.

On the next page to him there was another lad from Faroe - Kristoffer Davidson from (I think it says) Kongshaven, Faroe. He was lodging at the same address as Peter. Maybe one of your contacts on Faroe knows someone looking for him?

Annie,

I can confirm that Peter Frederick Petersen who kindly checked out for me, was my Great Grandfather from the Faroe Islands.

The family in the Faroe Islands have confirmed the link.

Also the other person living in the same house Christopher Davidsen is related to the person that I am in contact with.

Also the people in Faroe Islands have sent me this morning the birth details of Peter in the local church register.  A photocopy of the original details.

Once again thank you.

Keith,

I'm so glad you've made your connection at last. What a coincidence that the boy lodging with Peter is also related to your contacts
