Title: where in the 1871 census ?? - completed
Post by: eac61 on Wednesday 21 April 10 19:46 BST (UK)
I know that my Great great Grandfather David Howell(born abt 1836) was Station Master of Llwynypia Railway Station, Rhondda in 1871 thru to 1903.  He appears on the census records at the Station House in 1881, 1891, 1901 but I cant find him on 1871.  His family appear on census records (which I have details for) in Cardiff but he is not mentioned on it.  He only got appointed to Llwynypia Station in 1871 and prior to this worked for Taff Vale Railways in Cardiff ......

I am having trouble finding him by just his name and wondered if anyone knows what emmuneraton district in Ystradyfodwg the station house would be under.  (Llwynypia Road/Salem Terrace)

Many thanks

Hi

It's helpful to have details of all family members so I am posting the 1881 details of those children born before 1871 in case it helps to find him in 1871

David Howell 44 b Llanon, Carmarthenshire
Ann   40 b Rhymney, Monmouth
Charlotte M 15 b Treforest, Glamorgan
David W 14 b Taffs Well, Glamorgan
Sarah M 11 b Cardiff

I already have the details of his wife and family on a census in 1871 living in Cardiff.  What I am trying to do is find him on a census record, I know from a copy of an obituary in the newspaper that he took the position of Station Master at Llwynypia in 1871 prior to this he was working to Taff Vale at Cardiff.

Thanks

1881 the enumeration district is no. 20. In 1871, the enumeration districts go up to 11, but I haven't spotted a mention of the railway in any of the descriptions. It could be that he was at work and not enumerated.

Have you tried finding the staff records of the TVR?

Followed your link and it shows the following:

Former reference (Department)   TV15 1

Does this mean that I cannot access the records for 75 years ???

well, it's a little more than 75 years since 1882, so I wouldn't think there would be a problem.

think it would involve a visit to Kew or finding someone to look him up for you as these records aren't covered in the documents online

I asked Anthony at Treorchy library and he come up trumps - he is a star !!! David Howell was staying at the Ivor Hael public house right next door to the station, I suspect he hadnt long moved to Llwynypia, his family were still  in Cardiff at the time .....

Many thanks for everybody's input !!!

No wonder we couldn't find him - he shows up as 23 on the 1871 census, born 1848!

haha I know - but Im pretty sure it has to be him.  I have recently enquired a copy of his obituary and it says he started working at Llwynypia Railway Station in 1871 so it makes sense................
I would still be interested in finding his occupational records (if held) as his children appeared to be born in a few places Treforest, Taffs Well, Cardiff, and Llwynypia - all railway station destinations ???
Thanks again for your help
