Post by: cherylg on Tuesday 27 April 10 22:04 BST (UK)
Hi

Can anyone help please?

I am trying to trace any details regarding my grandmother x 4 Ruth Spencer nee Lewis.

On the 1841 Census she is living in Mold already married to my Grandfather x4 John Spencer.

She was born in Mold c 1791 she was the daughter of Edward Lewis who was a Brickmaker also born in Mold.I have this info from her Marriage certificate.

I have found an Edward Lewis living near to Ruth and John on the 1841 Census, his wife's name is Catherine and I am sure this is him.

But I am struggling find out anything else e.g her siblings or her mothers maiden name can anybody help please?

Hi Cheryl

I've checked the Clwyd FHS PR transcript for Mold.  Ruth Lewis is not listed (added - under baptisms to 1812)

Can you please post the reference for the 1841 census?

thanks
Heather

Hi

Can you post the 1841 reference number please as I cannot find a John & Ruth Spencer

Quote
She was born in Mold c 1791

I notice they only married in 1840 (Nantwich Cheshire) when Ruth would have been almost 50yrs old if b 1791 - is that correct

The only John & Ruth Spencer in 1841 were living in Henllan Denbighshire and both were only aged 20 and shown as not b in county

The Edward & Catherine Lewis also living in Henllan could well be the right ones as Edward is shown as a brickmaker which fits the 1840 marriage cert.  Given that they are also living next door to John & Ruth in 1841 I think it probably clinches it

Hi Cheryl

With regards to the query you posted on the "Lookup Offers" I could not find any children born to an Edward and Catherine, although the books I have only go as far back as 1813.

Anyways there are quite a few LEWIS families in Mold at this time and between 1813 and 1820 there are 17 different families who baptise their children at St. Marys

There was only one RUTH LEWIS mentioned but she was the daughter of John and Mary LEWIS of Ewloe Wood, Hawarden; Occupation Potter-man. She was baptised on the 29 April 1814.

Please let me know if you would like me to list the rest of the baptisms.

Is this the correct 1851 entry?

1851 for Burland Cheshire - children all b Burland

John Spencer 30 b Wrenbury Cheshire
Ruth   29 b Buckley Wales
Edwin   9
Ann  6
Catherine   3
Caleb  8 Months

If this is the correct entry then it would put Ruth's birth around 1822, I've just checked the Mold PRs between 1821 and 1826 and there are no Ruth Lewis' baptised at St. Marys.

I think you have confused the birthyears for Edward & Catherine Lewis who are both shown as aged 50 on the 1841 census so b 1791

Ruth was born around 1822

Ruth was born around 1822

So if the 1851 Census is correct and Ruth was born in Buckley, Flintshire she may have been baptised at Hawarden's St. Deniols, Pentrobin or at one of the many non-conformist Churches in the area.

Buckley is basically made up of Bistree and Argoed. It is surround by Ewloe, Ewloe Green and Myndd Isa. More can be found about Buckley here: http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/FLN/Buckley/

I grew up in Mold and the many faces of Buckley still confuse me when i'm looking for my lot!!

Strangely - The 1861 has a similar spelling for her birthplace as the 1851 which I read as a mistranscription of Buckley.

The spelling on the 1851 is BURKLEY and on the 1861 it's either BULEKELY or BULEKEBY

Ruth's father was Edward Lewis Brickmaker.
John father was George Spencer Labourer.

1841 Census:
Adddress: Slag Main?
Parish of Henllan

Hi,
I'm currently researching the Lewis family and i came across your messages on Roots .com. I think that Edward and Catherine Lewis are the ones which belong to the line which i am investigating. You were looking for siblings of a Ruth Lewis. It is possible if all is correct that Isaac Lewis, my 3x great grandfather is the brother of Ruth. I'm basing this on the fact that i have Isaacs' marriage certificate and it names his father as Edward, living in Llanerch and a brickmaker. Brick making seems to run in the family for a while, as his son, Isaac is a brick maker too.Edward and Catherine seem the only likely couple to be there parents at this moment in time. I noted that you wrote your messages in April, so you may have more information by now. In the next couple of weeks i am hoping to go to the Archives near Chester to come up with more information.

Hi

Yes I am still researching Ruth Lewis.

But struggling I have Ruth's marriage certificate which states her father is Edward Lewis Brickmaker.

Going by the 1841 Census I am sure that John and Ruth Spencer (nee Lewis) are living next door to who I am sure are her parents Edward and Catherine Lewis, but there are no siblings.

Ruth was my Grandmother x 2 on my Grandfathers side.

Ruth and John moved to Cheshire which is where my Gt Grandfather Edwin Spencer was born,Ruth died in 1878 and as buried in Acton Nantwich Cheshire Cementery.

We have Ruth's funeral card which is framed and it contains a picture of Ruth on the front of it.
It also has a beautiful poem that is dedicated to her on under her picture.

I don't know quite where to go now as I do not know the Area in which she was born so any help you could give me would be gratefully received.

I suppose we are cousins but haven't quite worked out how many times removed yet!!!

Would love to hear from you again as you probably have a lot of info regarding the Lewis side of the family.

Rgds

Hi,

I went to the archives at Hawarden, Wales. It wasn't very successful. I was looking for Edward and Catherine. Couldn't find any marriage or baptisms for their children. I was looking around the Mold area as i presume thats where they were most likely to have got married as they said they were born in that aea. I also looked for Isaacs baptism but again, no luck. There maybe a couple more microfilms left to look at so i may take another trip in the near future, but it's not looking good. I did find two baptisms of children which i didn't know about born to Isaac and Mary so it wasn't a total waste. I may also have to visit the archives a Ruthin as that covers the Denbighshire area which overlapped with Flint in the early years. So all in all nothing to report to you that is of any use. If anything does turn up i'll let you know.

Bye for now.
