Wonder if there is still an archivist for KX? I have a grave number and was hoping to be able to visit grave.
Thanks.
-
Isn't King Cross Cemetery one of those which has been landscaped, with some of the headstones now propped up against the perimeter walls ?
Halifax FHS might have a booklet.
-
I just saw a photo taken in Feb 2010. It looks like I might need a machete. I will try Halifax FHS.
Thanks,
Jan
-
Ah yes, more than one cemetery in the King Cross area
-
Lani, Is the Cem you are talking about the one with methodist burials? Maybe it's Wesleyan Methodists?
I have two residents from Crossley Almshouses who were buried in methodist KingsX cem in late 1890s. Wonder if we're on the same page in this?
charlotte
-
Hi Charlotte,
Yes, I was told it's the KX Wesleyan cemetery. My great grandfather was buried there in 1903.
Sorry for the delay in answering, I do not live in the UK but am planning on visitng in June.
Jan
-
Hi Iani 10
I can help you find the grave if you have the section no and grave no, i have photographed the maps and made an exel file to try and find graves belonging to my family,
I live fairly close and visit often,
Regards,
Andy
-
Hi Andy,
I have a grave number but the gentleman at the archives did not mention a section. It is grave number 734.
Thanks,
Jan
-
Andy, May I ask a favour please?
If you are visiting the cem and taking photos would it be possible for you to look for the grave of my two that I was discussing earlier in the thread?
They are James Hargreaves d. 1895 in grave 798 and his wife, Ann Hargreaves, 1896 in same grave I believe. They both died in the Crossley Almshouses so maybe there is a headstone erected by that charity.
Like Jan, I have no section number, just the grave number. I wonder if the Cem is divided into denominational areas as most are in Aus.They were methodists.
I hope you don't mind me asking Andy... and Jan hope it's OK to do this on your thread :-[

Dear Jan, Charlotte,
That map section of the graveyard is long lost, and the only way to get a handle on the grave allocations is to walk round photographing gravestones and cross-referencing them with the registers held in Halifax library.
I will endeavour to search for them and see if i can come up with a numbering system.
This part of the graveyard is badly overgrown and there are various sets of steps to allow access to the different tiers of the graveyard, if i can work out the numberings i will be able to find the graves.
Give me a week or so to get myself re aquainted with the layout and i will get back to you.
For everyone else that is interested in persons buried in the graveyard the other maps are very clear and graves can be found fairly easily using landmark gravestones and corners of the sections.
All for now,
Andy
-
Thanks so much Andy. Mr great grandfather's name is Learoyd Nicholl, buried June 26, 1903.
Charlotte - no problem. It's a shame that there are so many cemeteries that are not in in good shape.
Jan
-
Hi All,
just returned from the graveyard collecting marker graves and done a sketch, transfering it to a computer immage and then to library to collect grave numbers of the marker graves.
The rest of the graveyard is looking good, the new owners are making real headway felling trees and cutting back the undergrowth, they are 50 foot from one of my graves, but a long way from the part of the graveyard you are interested in, hopefully they will get there in the future so finding graves will be a lot easier.
Will post when i have any information.
Andy
-
Andy, thank you very much. Like Jan, I really appreciate your help.
charlotte
-
That goes for me too Andy.
Do you intend posting your computer image somewhere on the internet. I feel sure that it would be useful to a lot of people.
Dave
-
What a good idea dave :)... if Andy feels comfortable doing that of course.
charlotte
-
Hi All,
I have found the graves you asked for,
Charlotte,
yours is on the left on the lower tier by second grave along, the undergrowth arround each grave is very dense and full of brambles etc
Jan,
Your grave is immediateley to the left of the tree on the right of the picture,
If you would like a hand to hack your way into the undergrowth, let me know.
The Excel file i have made of the different Graveyards at King Cross Meth's is very much a work in progress and i am adding to the data as i go along, so until i get to a point where i am able to identify all graves i will continue adding to it.
When i have finished it i will post it somewhere on the net.
Regards,
Andy
-
Andy, Thank you so much for that info ;D ;D
I'm in Aus and hope some time to get to Halifax and look at the cem. amongst other places, so this is a great help.
When you put the data on the web, could you post the site to WRY Board on RC please so that we can see it all?
Thank you again so much.

Hi Andy,
Thank you so much. I live in the US and will be visiting Halifax June 3rd and 4th. It would be great to actually visit the grave. Am I able to get to it without too much trouble? Is there a headstone? I would appreciate some help while I am in town.
Thanks again.
Jan
-
Jan, Lucky you visiting in June :)
Will you tell us on this thread how you get on in the Cem and how difficult is it to find one's way around , as a stranger please?
Have a great visit,
charlotte
-
I was in the cemetery a couple of months ago and it is a bit of a jungle. From Andy's photo it looks like your graves are at the lower end of the cemetery near the Wainhouse tower. The footpaths are easy to get to but once you leave the beaten track as Andy says, you need a machete.
If you go to
www.bing.com/maps/
put College Terrace Halifax into the search box
drop down the birds eye view then navigate a few hundred yards to the West you will be able to see the cemetery.
-
Dave, Thanks for the link.
How close to the Crossley Almshouses is the cem?
My Hargreaves couple lived in the Almshouses. It will be interesting to see if the Almshouses put any form of marker or MI on the graves.
charlotte
-
It should have been College Terrace Halifax I've modified it now. To get from there to the Alms houses.
In Road map view
East along Free School Lane 300 m
North Savile Park Road 300 m
North Arden Road 50 m and Crossley's Alms Houses are on the left

Thanks. ;D
-
Hi All,
Jan if you PM me i will be glad to show you the grave, and try to hack back the brambles.
you will be limited for time and wasting hours searching is wasted research time,
Everyone else, I have superimposed some sticki notes onto an acrobat file of a 1907 O S map,
I cannot post it on here but if anyone wants it PM me and i will send it to you.
I am now aware how many people are interested in the graveyard and i will endeavour to sort some way of uploading a file to the net.
All for now,
Andy
-
Hi All,
Thanks for all your help. Yes, Charlotte, I will let you know how I get on. I am very excited to be going to where my family is from.
Andy, I will PM you and thanks again.
Jan
-
Jan,
I have managed to get through the undergrowth and there is a stone to comemorate your grave,
The photo is not that good, i need to get further in to get a better picture.
Charlotte,
I had a go at getting to where i thought your grave was, sadly it was the wrong grave, i will check the records to ensure i am in the right place and if so will try to get to a grave further in the undregrowth,
Regards,
Andy
-
Wow, thank you Andy. I am so impressed. Can't wait to see it for myself.
Jan
-
Hi All,
Charlotte,
I have found your Hargreaves grave, and there is a stone, albeit only an owners marker.
It had slipped into the grave due to subsidence, i have cleared the foliage arround it.
Regards,
Andy
-
Andy, thank you very much indeed or the photo and also those you sent me direct. I've been offline for over a week and my email is still bung >:( >:( >:( [never go near Win7 >:( >:(] so I haven't been able to thank you.
What is so significant about "Owner" that it is put so prominently on the headstone?
In the case of the Hargreaves I would have thought the grave would have been owned by the Almshouse.
Thank you again Andy
charlotte
-
Charlotte,
The " Owner" type of gravestone is much smaller than the usual type, i suppose its economy but still denoting the person interred.
I do not know of the Owners books being available to have a look in to confirm who paid for the plot.
The Almshouses would probably not have paid for the grave, there were in those days, burial insurance plans, you paid a small ammount each month for years in advance to enable you to be buried with decency in your own plot, my own family had one, and the Co-Op had a plan that paid a fixed dividend when you needed to bury someone.
Regards,
Andy
-
Again many thinks to Andy for his help while I was in Halifax.
-
Andy, can I just say that you've done a truly wonderful job for Charlotte and Jan, I have a mental of picture of "you" with a camera slung around your next, a notebook and pencil in your top pocket, machete in hand hacking your way through the undergrowth! Well done you! ;D
I'm not aware of any of "my lot" being buried in KX, a lot of mine are in Stoney Royd. Parkwood Crem have the Owner's Book for SR, maybe they have it for KX? Just a thought.

Hi Andy
Would you be able to locate my grandfathers grave in King Cross Cemetaty please? I believe he's buried in Section A, plot 205.
His name is Thomas McManus and is buried with my grandma, Hilda McManus in the Fletcher family grave.
Many Thanks
Antony McManus
-
Hello Anthony,
Will have a look this weekend and see if there is a stone, sect A is relativeley clear of debris.
205 is up near the old manse wall.
Regards,
Andy
-
Cheers Andy! I tried myself a couple of years ago but hadnt a clue where section A was. I spent a good hour in a fruitless search! Ta.
-
Hello Anthony,
I managed to find time to go to King cross today, and found the grave easily.
I have attached a photo, i have taken a dozen more, if you P M me with your email address i will forward them to you.
To find the grave, park on Skircoat Moor road, outside the car hire shop, go through the double gates to the left of the shop and walk down the wall side until you come to some graves on the left behing the shop.
Your grave is top row, second from left, easliy found and relativeley clear of growth.
The picture i have added is compressed to comply with RootsChat file sizes.
Regards,
Andy.
-
Thanks Andy

Hi drewhowson (Andy)
Wonder if you know where the graves are with just a number (No Section given in the register)
I'm looking for Esther Partington buried Oct 1st 1903 in grave 1043 or could be 1093 (hard to decipher 4 or 9 in the register).

Hi Sandra.
I'll try and find the grave? but with the state of the overgrowth in the grave yard and no maps as yet, but may take while to find. I'm in contact with the graveyard owner MR B Melia of Halifax an undertaker, who has the maps, who is also looking at them ! but the maps sound like as if they are in the same state as the Kingcross Wesleyan graveyard as in a right old mess, >: ( but Mr Melia (A very nice gentleman of the old school so to speak) is working on both the graveyard to tidy up (Hence graves with logs on. { can't be help as nowhere else to put them as a temp measure]-) and maps to make sense of.
We will find the grave oneway or another. ;)
For now!
Dobby :)
-
Thanks Dobby,
I wait in anticipation.
Sandra
-
Hello Dobby,
Yes, i can find the grave for you, it is in the second oldest section, badly overgrown but accessible.
there are no row numbers just graves listed from 1 to 1600.
will have a look tonight and try and see where it is located.
will let you know.
regards,
Andy
-
Hi Andy
Thank's! you know that graveyard better than me, I'm OK with the later A to D Sections by the gate but the rest seems like stars in space in the jungle of the Amason without a compass. :-[
-
Dobby,
Are you sure it is grave 1043 and not 93?
makes no difference it is only one row apart.
Regards,
Andy
-
I've posted the image from Ancestry.com/co.uk and it could be either, It looks like it could be 1049 on close examination but looking at other 9's on the page they seem different but on the other hand neither do the 4's- so I don't know.
If it has not got a gravestone on either grave 1043 or 1049 a general photo of the area about where its likely to be as an unmarked grave will do.
Thanks
Dobby :)
-
PS.
Looking at the aged 44 the 4's have a distinct sharp corner on the left of the 4's in 44 but not in the 4 in if 1043 therefore it must be 1093 (see register image 1903 )
-
Hi all,
I have found the grave 1043 easily, the hearstone is laid face down, there is a James Radcliffe (buried feb 1959) engraved on the curb of the grave. ( Ring any Bells?)
I have not found grave 1093, i thought i was on the right row, but i seem to be a row out and because there are steps along side this row that get wider as you go downhill i must have slipped up.
I will go back this weekend and find the grave, even if there is no stone.
i will need to get myself some markers and find stones nearby that i can identify.
The undergrowth is rather thick and hard to get through but i will find it.
if the Radcliffe name rings any bells i will stand the headstone up and record it.
Regards,
Andy.
-
Hi Andy
With there bing a Radcliffe name in grave 1043 also, why would the writer change the style of his precise neat 4's in aged 44 to a fast scribble 4 on the grave location in the next box entry 1043. also its very faint but can see a full joint up on the top of the 9- grave 1093 also the top of the 3 is very faint or missing
see image below

Hello Dobby,
I had a wander round yesterday to get fresh markers for that area of the graveyard and i have found the location.
I will go today and clear the area and see if there is a stone or curb.
I record graves in the aproximate locations then go back and look at the registers.
It is much easier now that the book is online, saves lots of trips to the library.
i have markers for every row except this one as i cannot get near the top of the row due to far too much undergrowth.
Regards,
Andy

Hi Andy
Undergrowth ?- I've seen jungles thinner!! than that tangle of organic wirewool with spikes >:( or was it razor wire. :)
-
Hi Dobby,
I found the grave easily, it was rather overgrown amd a tree is growing in the next grave blocking the light.
There is the main stone and 3 other people are comemorated arround the curbs. i have also taken a stood back view of the immediate area.
i have reduced the photo size for the website.
I will send original sizes if you PM me email address.

Hi Andy
Thanks
Brilliant! :D work.
I'll leave it to Sandra now! (As PM'ing you)
How does one get to the grave from your earlier photo
I know the postion of the teir photo you took.
Dobby :)

Hi Dobby,
the graveyard is behind the chapel, there are some paths that are just managable but in wet weather they are not safe.
You go through the gates and down the hill until you get to a small clearing and a path goes off to your right, after a few yards it opens up into a clearing and some steps coming down the hill.
the grave is on the right of these steps perhaps 12 graves up, in the trees.
Regards,
Andy

I have sent Sandra the photos,

HI Andy,
Excellent job and received the photos ok of Esther's grave

was the last one which reads Clara and can't read the rest of it.
Forgotten how to pm you, could you tell me how and I can forward my e mail address to you.
Both you and Dave have worked hard to find this grave and goodness what is in the undergrowth there but so grateful to you both for your efforts.
Thanks again Andy, your a real gem.
Sandra

I've sore head! :( :-[ after last nights party and a 3 egg breaky in Derbyshire .
Could I take this opportunity too thank Andy!! from us all on Rootschat also more this thread for his dedicated work to overcome difficulties and get results :D of requested burials for members afar or with disabilities who would never have opportunity's to come to Yorkshire themselves.
Enjoy the weekend
Regards
Dobby :)

Hi Andy,
No need to send photo, that one is much later so not
really of any accord. Will keep a note of it though it might tie in with something, but have a feeling that this might be
Clara North.
Amy Partington , my grandmother , married Joseph
North and that is the only Clara that comes to mind.
Will have a search and see if I can find this George Henry Hogg marriage.
Anyway thanks again to you both and I second Dave's
comments to you.

Wonder if anyone has a map or plan for King Cross. I am looking for Grave H-4, Charles Hutchinson, buried May 27, 1871.
Thanks,
