Wonder if anyone can help me with information about the families of Alexander Gallagher and Annie Carlin, both of them I think originally from Derry. Alexander's parents were James Gallagher and Ann McLoughlin don't have the names of Annie's parents. They married in Greenock Scotland about 1882 but I can't seem to find any trace of them on the census.

First complete census for Ireland is 1901. 1911 census is online (free) and 1901 is due to be added in June 2010.
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search
Registration of births in Ireland started in 1864 so it's possible that neither will have birth certificates. To find any existing church records you'll need to know both the families' religion and where they lived (parish or street).
Could the Gallaghers have come from Donegal (not far from city of Londonderry)?
I.G.I. (www.familysearch.org) lists 3 children with parents James and Ann Gallagher (although Gallagher and McLaughlin are both common surnames so these may not be your relatives)-
1. Eliza Gallagher born 5 May 1866 Burt and Inch and Fahan district, Co. Donegal (page 197 in civil register) (mother Ann McLaughlin)
2. Letitia Gallagher born 10 July 1871 Co. Donegal (mother Ann McLaughlin)
3. John Gallagher born 27 May 1873 Co. Donegal (mother Anne McLaughlin)

yes Aghadowey, think that is the family. I'm not sure if they originated in Donegal and moved later to Derry. There was a sister Letitia, the name survived to the next generation, my mother has a sister Letitia named after my grandfather's aunt.
I put the query on this board too in case someone looking in might have a connection. I have looked at the 1911 census and not found anything promising. I'm hopeful they will turn up in the 1901 census because I can't find them on the Scottish census at that time. I know they travelled back and forth a great deal so entirely possible I'll get them on the 1901.
Do you think it's worth moving the post to the Donegal board?

Will move it to Donegal board for you now.

thanks Aghadowey, now have the names of Anne's parents. Joseph Carlin and Unity Lynch and there's a son on IGI Robert born 1871 Donegal so that was spot on. Thanks for your help.

oh thank you so much for that. I've just been looking around on Google and see that the name has a few variations of spelling so will look at igi again. Thanks again for your help very much appreciated.

just wondered if you could tell me where you found the marriage? Is it on IGI too?
-
Maggie,
Marriage was from Emerald Ancestors, a subscription site but it is also on the Record Search Pilot site of www.familysearch.org Enter Unity Lynch and nothing else and when the results come up you can refine the EVENT to marriage. Doing this for both couples also gives fathers'names.
