Can anyone tell me what is here now? My great aunt, Susanna Lyall lived here to at least 1901.
Also I am interested to finding a photo of the White Hart (pub) which was in King Street, Market Rasen. My great uncle William Goodson was the licensee here in 1851. He was later the licensee of the Swan Inn in Queen Street.
Much appreciated

I went through there on Friday, but can`t remember seeing The White Hart, which doesn`t mean to say it`s not still there !!
You could look on Streetview

I tried streetview for 57 Willingham Road, but still couldn't see what is there. It's right the crossroads.
Will try the White Hart, thanks.

The house numbering for Willingham Rd in the 1901 census is consecutive 1, 2, 3, 4 ... not 1, 3, 5, 7 etc.
Helpfully, No.35 is shown as Fern House - which still stands today. http://tinyurl.com/37r8qc5 The numbers continued up to No.59 to be followed by De Aston school. The census continued with Willingham Road (all unnumbered) finishing at Pasture Lane - I'm guessing these were all on the north side of the road.
The school (or its replacement) stands in the same place today. I can't see any old houses on the south side of the road between Fern House and the school. Nor can I see any on the 1907 map at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/maps.html
I wonder how the houses on the north side are numbered today ... I can't see any numbers on Streetview.

Hello Geoff
Thanks.
It is soooooooooo frustrating. I didn't have this info last year when I actually visited Market Rasen in Oct. I could have looked!! But it's always the way. It's the same with the pub - I knew about the White Swan, which when I was there had just reopened. But didn't know about the White Hart and now I can't find anything about that. Maybe I'll get back in 2012!
regards

Both Willingham Road and King Street show up on 'Google Earth'. Maybe someone with local knowledge could make sense of the buildings from the information given by Geoff-E and you could see a 3D image. Hope so!

Hi, I live near Market Rasen, I'll go and have a look tomorrow.
-
I went though Market Rasen again yesterday and spotted something that might be what you are looking for.
Just before the crossroads where King Street becomes Willingham Road there is a closed down bar I think it had the name Goldmine Bar on it, but it looked like an old pub.
I`ll try to find out more for you
-
That would be much appreciated - thank you!

Sorry for the delay, but I`ve had a bit of a search in Market Rasen, as I was going through.
The closed down bar is actually at 52 Queen Street, although it looks like an old coaching inn as there is an arch where the horses would have entered the yard. The original supports for the sign are still there, but no sign !!!
I asked 2 ladies in the street if they knew anything about the White Hart, but without success.
I also went to the library and while they had some books on Lincolnshire, even with the librarian`s help , again without success, although she did say there was probably more and better information at Gaisnborough Library.
If I go there before I go to the Archives I`ll look again for you .

The 1933 Kelly's Directory gives the White Hart to be 3 King Street.
I now believe it is all of this building http://tinyurl.com/3a88uwm
Moving to the left, you'll find "The Chase" pub which is No.1 - "Greyhound Inn" in 1933.
Moving to the right, there is the "Gate of India" which is No.5 - a Grocer's in 1933.
-
I was looking in the wrong place, but you would have thought that the local library would have had more books about Market Rasen !

Depends how many books have actually been written about Market Rasen. :)
-
Yes, I totally agree !!
Perhaps I`m a bit naive, but I thought there would have been at least one.
-
Thanks to everybody for your help. I now have a photo of the house that is at 57 Willingham, and it is apparently just like it would have been in 1905. I also have a photo of the White Hart, which is now flats. The lady who's B & B I stayed at last October put me on to someone.
Thanks so much for your time

Re BillyF's comment about the lack of books:
I confess to knowing nothing about Market Rasen (not sure if I've even been through it), but reading about it in Genuki it seems to be only a village (and very small in terms of acreage), and therefore unlikely to have enough detail for too many books.
I think even larger villages only ever 'attracted' publication when people decided to commemorate the millennium by publishing parish histories.
If it's any consolation at least Charles Dickens seems to have visited Market Rasen, though I don't know if his opinion of it is complimentary or not! :)

... it seems to be only a village ...
Hi Pam :)
I think of it as a town. It easily satisfies my requirement of a town - two banks - as it actually has three! (and a Halifax and a market place!) http://tinyurl.com/324ldty

Hi Geoff, :)
As I don't know Market Rasen at all, I had to rely on Genuki, and comparing the details to places I am slightly more familiar with such as Kirton, Frampton, and Swineshead. And which I would still describe today as villages. Though in fairness, none of them seem to be overflowing with banks or building societies. ;D

Does this make it a town ? It has a very large Tescos.
And don`t forget the racecourse !!!!
-
to all who are unsure tescos does not maketh a town ,,but as we have got a market place a town it does make us ..
-
The White Hart at Rasen was in King St. near where it joins the market place. It was there when I was younger. I have a photo of it on my computer.
