Hello all This is my first post. I am hoping to find guidance on my search for my English roots. My father recently gave me a family Bible with an original marriage cert. in it. It is from St.Chad's in Rochdale from sept 1878.
James Chadwick age 26 from Rochdale parents Harriet and James Chadwick(deceased) and Sarah Ann Howard age 27 from Rochdale parents Sarah and Edmund Howard(deceased).
I have definitely found them in the 1881 census in Castleton with 1 year old son Edward. Sarah left for the US in ~1888 with three children and presumably one on the way(my ggrandfather James b1889 in New Jersey).
The next mention of James is that Sarah is a widow in 1900 US census.
Can anyone help?

who are witnesses on the marriage cert?
Might they be relatives??
What was occupation of deceased fathers??
The only James I can find with parents James/harriet is this one -(although marriage cert says of Rochdale -that doesnt necessarily mean that is where he was born

Hi,
A very warm welcome to Rootschat.
I am a bit concerned over the marriage certificate as it would not contain the mothers names only their fathers names. Were their mothers names recorded in the family bible as being Harriet and Sarah?

I believe mothers were included due to both fathers being deceased. I will double check doc at home
thx

Thank you Posteria - I won't bother checking now!
I'm intrigued.
Loads of my Rochdale were family were stonemasons and Chadwicks were never far away!

On the 1900 US Census, Sarah gives her birth year as 1851. If she had been the daughter of Edmund and Sarah (as has been suggested) then she would have been much older. Her youngest child, born in 1889, is shown as John H Chadwick, incidentally.
Having looked at this from various angles, I think that the following is the more likely family of Sarah Ann Howard who married in 1878 .....
1871
Rochdale RG10/4119 Folio 148 Page 26
Edmund Howard Head M 56 Mechanic Lancashire Rochdale
Ann do Wife M 56 Lancashire Rochdale
Sarah A do Daur U 19 Cotton Weaver Lancashire Rochdale
Edward do Son 14 Lancashire Rochdale
Rachael Ashworth Boarder U 20 Woollen Operative Lancashire Rochdale
Cranberry Lodge, Castleton, Rochdale
The most likely marriage for these parents seems to be 9th November 1835 at St Chad, Rochdale - Edmund Howard (Mechanic) and Ann Shore both of Drake Street, Rochdale.
The family can be seen on earlier censuses ....
1861 Rochdale RG9/3038 Folio 90 Pages 31/32
1851 Rochdale HO107/2244 Folio 548 Page 33
1841 Rochdale HO107/550/14 Folio 17 Page 26
On each of these they are shown with a daughter Mary born c1836. I think that this could possibly be the Mary Brierley with whom James and Sarah Ann Chadwick are living in 1881.
Does anyone else agree with any or all of this ?

On 13th July 1867 at St Chad, Rochdale, Mary Howard, Spinster, aged 31 (father Edmund Howard - Mechanic) married Edmund Brierley, Widower, aged 34.

Hello arborist -apologies for not Welcoming you on your first post
As Mo posted it is unusual for Mother's name to be on UK marriage cert - I would go as for as to say unlikely!!
I think I have found James -but mother's name "Louisa"???
Maybe because harriet Chadwick was a witness on the marriage cert it was (mistakenly) thought she was james' mother _I believe she was his sister
1881 census shows James Chadwick age 26 stonemason b Rochdale with wife Sarah A and her brother Edmund Howarth -and other family -you can view this free on family search

Hello. I came about your question searching for some of my history. Edmund howard the mechanic married to ann shore is my 3xgreat grandfather. I don't dna match to the Chadwicks but my mother does. I manage her dna on ancestry. If you link to her it might be possible to see if it is the correct Sarah ann
