From my earlier posts on http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,457602.0.html i would like to be able to try and find out what Company of the Royal Engineers he was in and went to Gibraltar about 1850-1865. From there i could get his service papers.
I'm trying desperatly to find out detailed military information on Francis George Irwin.
He was born in Armagh, Northern Ireland on 19 June 1828, the son of Robert Irwin, a Sapper in the Royal Sappers and Miners.
His wife was Ellen McAuliffe.
He enlisted in his father's regiment at Chatham, Kent in 1842.
He was then transferred to Gibraltar as a Sergeant in the Royal Engineers. He remained in Gibraltar until he returned to England in 1865 after an intervening posting, possibly in Malta.
In 1866 he moved to Bristol and on 7 May that year he was appointed Adjutant of the 1st Gloucestershire Engineer Volunteer Corps, with the rank of Captain, later Major.

Hi, I have no idea what year you posted this but...I've been researching a Robert Irwin born 1806 in St John, Limmerick, Ireland. He married Helen X and among their children had Catherine Irwin born 1841 in Adelaide South Australia while Robert was posted there. Robert was with the Royal Regiment Sappers and Miners and also in Gibraltar and Hong Kong.
Catherine was to marry George Fuller, also a sapper and miner who served in Gibraltar.
So I'm wandering if the Francis George Irwin you are looking for was another child of Robert and Helen.
I'm sure by now you will have found the discharge records for Francis George Irwin on Ancestry.co.uk. If not and you want a copy let me know and I'll email them to you.
Kind regards
Kay

Hi Kay, it was some time ago.
The person i was researching was a Francis George Irwin, see earlier posts please.
Yes, he came to Gibraltar and became a member of Calpe Lodge No. 325 I.C.
Have a read here https://inspectorategib.wixsite.com/calpelodge325/our-history (https://inspectorategib.wixsite.com/calpelodge325/our-history)
This Irwin was in fact a very important Freemason of his time.
See page 33 from this http://www.bristol-masonic-society.org.uk/Vol%200405%20online.pdf (http://www.bristol-masonic-society.org.uk/Vol%200405%20online.pdf)
I never got that far as to his discharge papers, sorry to say.
Sounds like you've done a lot of research on him.
May i ask the connection?
A copy would be nice thank you.

Re discharge records from Find My Past (not Ancestry, my mistake). Darned Rootsweb wont let me send this number of records (five pages).
Do you have access to FMPast?
guess you will not want to put your email address on here??? I could send them that way.
My interest is George Irwin Fuller (who married Catherine Irwin) had son Ernest Irwin Fuller who had Ada Kate Fuller - my partner's grandmother.
Do you have info on Francis' parents or siblings? Still trying to see if any connection.
Best wishes
Kay
