I am looking to link my Shambrooks with the vast numbers who seemed to have lived in Fremington and the surrounding area!
The furthest I have managed to go back is to James Shambrook, born circa 1832 in Fremington. Any info anyone can offer me regarding his birth or relations would be very gratefully received. :)
I also have a lot of info on James' descendents if anyone is interested.

I have found James on the 1851 census, but he was not with his family. He was working as a farm labourer at West Barton, Barnstaple.
HO107/1893/571 p2 family of Thomas Copp, a farmer
West Barton, Horworrd & Newton Tracey Barnstaple, Devon
James Shambrook age 17 Farm labourer b Furmington
There are a number of Shambrook families around the area, some can be ruled as the parents of James since they have another son called James! Unfortunately I can't work out which one would be his parents. Any more info which might help?

Thanks for the welcome and the lookup!
One thing I have found is that the Shambrooks had their favourite names and they seem to stick to them, so there are masses of James', Henry's, Robert's, etc which makes life a bit harder to find the right one!!
I don't know anything else about James' direct family, other than he married Ann Rodd in July 1857 in Newton Tracy.
They've been a fun family to trace so far, as they had 9 children and moved from Devon to Caerleon in Monmouthshire (don't know why - maybe to do with James' job? he moved on from farm labourer to be a coachman/groom.). His oldest son George and his wife had 13 children (ouch!) and moved to Hereford.
One of these days my mum and I are going to go on a little tour of records offices in Barnstaple, Caerleon and Hereford!

I think we may have a connection, or at least I hope I am on the right track! My 3rd Great Grandfather, William Shambrook could possibly be the brother to your James who married Ann Rodd.
William Shambrook married Rachel Copp around 1858 in Devon. In the 1851 Census, I found William and his brother Henry were servants working for Joshua Downing. Joshua was a neighbour to Thomas Copp where James was working.
William's parents were said to be Henry Shambrook and Ann Huxtable who married in 1830 at Tawstock. They had a son named James who was born around 1832, Fremington. So I'm hoping that this is your James.
William Henry b 1836, I believe was a son of James and Ann. He was suppose to have come out to Queensland, Australia around 1895. My Great Grandfather James Shambrook, son of William and Rachel, come out around 1885.

I have quite a lot from James downwards, including his son William Henry. I also have a tree of the Shambrooks from someone I contacted through Genesreconnected - including the names you mentioned.

a variation of the name in herefordshire (leominster/pembridge) c1800 cld hve bn Sandbrook.
hornsby/sandbrook is a x5 gp pairing for my group.

I have James Shambrook born c1809 in Fremington married to Ann with 5 children, Thomas, Rebecca, Mary, James & Robert. I have lots of info on descendants of Thomas.

I just found out tonight that my 3rd great grandmother was Mary Shambrook b. about 1807. She first married a man named Hill. She remarried between 1831 and 1834 to John Tucker. Would be interested in find out more. I do not know if Mary Shambrook was born in Devon or not though on the 1841 census she stated she was born in that county..though I have found that wrong.

Hi, I've just started out on the ancestry trail and believe that the James Shambrook born in fremington in 1809 mentioned by jmills, may be my g-g-g-grandfather and I'm also building up a tree from direct descendants of Thomas.
I appreciate the previous posts were 3 years ago, but it would be great to hear of anything which might help.

Hi Garys....sorry I can't be of any help..I'm still stuck where I was in July 2006 but then I haven't done much research on this line. But I wanted to make sure I left you a post back so you know that someone is still reading these posts. I will be more than happy to share with you the info that I have on my line. Perhaps my mary Shambrook is a sister to your James.

Hi keefer, thanks for the reply and it's good to know that this thread is still being viewed.
Most of my research so far has been from the Census records and I have traced my grandparent back to 1841 where James was aged 25 and his wife Ann 30. They had children Thomas (5), Rebecca (3) and Mary (7 months). That's why I thought the other post seemed to coincide with mine. There seems to be a number of Thomas's and Mary's in the family around that time and your Mary may well have been James sister.
My ancestors eventually moved to London but I'm not quite sure of when or why. Devon seeemed to be a popular place for Shambrooks around that time!

I am not a member of the Shambrook family, BUT, I have been checking out the headstones in Fremington churchyard.... eventually to send to the gravestone project.

It is still a work in progress, having photographed approx 1/2 the churchyard.
Anyway back to the plot, if it is any use to anyone I have found a headstone for the following branch of the Shambrook family.
Mary Shambrook died Nov 1st 1903 age 69
husband William Shambrook d. Aug 12th 1913 age 81
son Thomas Thorne Shambrook d. Jan 13 1939 age 76.
