My great grandfather's brother is described thus in Whites 1856 - what did it entail and why was he it? The said man was a farmer.

Perhaps an exaggeration, but
"Lordship of this or that manor is no more a title than Landlord of The Dog and Duck". ;D
See Wiki http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lord_of_the_Manor

He may also have inherited or rented the local manor farm. Whereabouts was he located?

The lord of the manor thing is in relation to Middle Rasen, Lincs in 1856. William Goodson was listed as a Framer, at Manor House. He was also the Postmaster, located at the White Hart Inn, King St Market Rasen.
His brother John was listed as a Farmer, at the Grange.
I have been trying to find where these 2 properties were, and if they still exist today, but really have no idea where to look. I tried Rasen Heritage and also Lincolnshire Archives, with no luck. Any other ideas?

You could google Manor Farm,Market Rasen Lincs. There are several, but at a quick look none seemed to fit. Suggest download an old OS map for the area, find the farm's location and then look at later maps etc.Take a while, but should work.

Thanks Roger
I have a couple of likely candidates that have no email so I write and see what that turns up.
Thank you
