Anyone any idea what a waterworks superintendant's job would involve.
My Ancestor Thomas Dunkerley came from Bolton - presumably to fill this post
at the Guide Reservoir near Blackburn 1851-61 There seemed to be a tied
house involved because on the 1871 there is another man as a waterworks
superintendant in one of the little houses at Suddell Nook ajoining the reservoir.
I would imagine that he just patrolled the area and fished(excuse the pun) anyone out who had fallen in.
Any ideas about finding records about this.
Thanks

I recently saw a program which covered this job and it seemed quite important.
From this site:
http://www.haworth-village.org.uk/history/urban-council/1881-1890.asp
1st July, 1884
"The Waterworks superintendent reported that he had received Dr Atkinson's report on the samples of water from Hough reservoir sent to be analysed, which report was considered satisfactory by the Board.
It was resolved that the water be turned off every weekday from 6.30 in the evening until 12 o'clock next day, and from 1.30 in the afternoon until 5 o'clock in the evening, with the exception of Mondays when the water shall be turned on from 8 to 9 o'clock in the morning extra. That on Sundays the water be turned on from 12 o'clock to 2 o'clock in the afternoon only.
That the Bellman be instructed to cry through the district cautioning consumers against wasting the water, and that the Waterworks Superintendent makes inquiries respecting putting fish into the Hough reservoir."

On WDYTYA, Sheila Hancock discovered that her great-grandfather was the Superintendent of the Western Pumping Station, part of the Victorians' grand sewage scheme for London. He had a house at the station and was the Manager in charge of all men employed there.

HI Morganllan. Thanks very much for all that info. It is very informative,.
Now I know from whom I got my BRAIN - obviously the water superintendant!!
ha.ha.
I have been in touch with the Dunkerley-tuson line. There is not a direct connection but I am stuck with the Thomas Horrock Dunkerley in my family
in which I think my great great grandfather Thomas's( who was born in Bolton )_motherwas a Betty Horrox.
There are two Thomas Horrock Dunkerleys in Blackburn in the 18oo's one is
great grandfathers brother and the other one I cant connect to. So problems there!
They are not my direct line but go through my paternal grandma's surname.
Anyway
