Title: can anyone improve this document
Post by: dinkey on Friday 16 July 10 21:30 BST (UK)
I am having trouble reading this old document. Can anyone improve the quality for me.

I have several others of a similar period if anyone is willing to help.

Many thanks

The right hand side (top) is out of focus.
Rotating the document and changing to greyscale (turn to black/white), the lower half of document can be clearly read.
(Could you scan the document rather than taking a photo?)

The document was sent to me by email years ago and it has only now become relevant to my research. Sadly the person who sent it has passed away and so I do not have acces to the original.

It is the top part of the document which I am trying to decipher.

Sorry I could not be more helpful

hi Dinkey

Did you compress or reduce the size of the photo to post on Rootschat?
If not, I don't think there is anything you can do as I have just played with it and tried zooming in and it is just blurred.
If you did reduce it can you  repost  the original, if its too big then crop back and post bits at a time.... don't forget to SAVE AS so that you don't overwrite the original though.

Can anyone give me all the names mentioned under the date heading of 1632. I do not want to influence a reply by putting down what I think but I would appreciate others opinions.

many thanks

1.   .... Travis  (could possibly be Alex ? or maybe Seth? Travis).  This is the same person as named 1. in the last deed settlement
2. Alex Walker

If you know where the original book is kept, why don't you send an email and ask for a scan to be taken of page 54?  You might have to pay but it is only one page which shouldn't cost to much.

All I know is that the pages come from a booklet. Unfortunately I do not know the title or the author . The booklet was held in a repository in Manchester.

As there are a number of places in Manchester where the booklet could have come from I do not think they would be willing to look it up for me without having a title of the book or when it was dated.

This is the reason why I am trying other options to obtain the information held in these pages.

It looks like a transcript of the memorial deeds to me which should be kept at the main archives in Manchester.  If you have any other pages which shows the memorial deed refs it will help the archives. You already have a date 1632!
Usually only main records offices will hold these memorial deed documents and should be able to tell you straight away if they have transcript books.  They may also hold copies if the deeds are held in private archives.

If I were you, just send a mail and ask if they hold memorial settlement deeds for c1632 and are they transcribed as you are looking for the transcript book for which you have a photo.. If necessary send them a copy of the photo too.  If they don't then they should know who does.

I have not heard of memorial settlement deeds. The name suggests land that is settled on the death of the owner.  Did you mean manorial deeds which does seem to be the most likely.

I wiil do as you suggest and contact Manchester Records Office and ask them if they do have such a catalogue.

Thank you hopefully pointing me in the right direction.

no...
Deeds cover a wide range of legal agreements.  We usually know them by the shortened name of Deeds, but the full title is "memorial deed".  If you go to the national archives or records office and request to see one of the books, the referencing on the page lists the memorial number, date it was registered.
I have transcripts of several marriage settlement deed documents from the 18century.

Going through the deed records, I have also seen wills, land lease agreements, gift bequests, loans, land sales etc.

the attached is a land lease... from Ireland, but the English ones are very similar, your one has the refs in the margin too.  Your one looks more like an idex than the actual document though

Thank you for that additional information and putting me right on this document. I am really glad that I put the request on here as it is knowledgable people like you that are educating me as to what I hold and how I can proceed further.

I really do appreciate your help and advice.
