Title: Scottish Boer war nurse found new life in New York Completed
Post by: conseiller on Wednesday 21 July 10 11:39 BST (UK)
My maternal  Great Great Aunt -  Agnes Stokes (born on 16th June 1879 in Aberdeen, Scotland) at the age of 28, who was trained as a nurse, left her Parents and siblings and sailled for a new life in New York in late 1911  - she is reputed to have married before WW1, a German immigrant living in New York  called Wilhelm Warnken  - - the only other peices of informaton we have are fragments of information taken from old postcards which survived the blitz in Scotland  -  namely that Wilhelm and Agnes had we believe 3 children - George, William and Ernest and that Wilhelm had driven the Ice Wagon.

What happened to Agnes after her arrival in New York is is a mystery  - we dont know when exactly she arrived , who she stayed with, when she and Wilhelm married or any information about her family life and what happened to her and her children.
So any information will all be greatly appreciated.

Regards - Luc.

Hi aghadowey and dettori28

Wow thats is so fantastic  and very much appreciated. To think that I thought the possibility finding any information at all about my  relatives in America would not be possible - well thanks to the kindness of Rootschat's members I now know more than I ever thought possible to find - Thank you so very Much!!

aghadowey  thanks for the advise I have taken your advise and checked  both sites  the Ellis Island site gave me a brief glimpse before it crashed again but it was up long enough for me to note that Agnes went to New York in 1911 to Stay with - "sister Mrs Corrgan 346 E 58th st. New York"
This has opened a question for according to my Scottish family records - Agnes was the only one of my relatives born in Scotland who lived in the U.S. and stranger still as to our knowledge none of the family married a Mr Corrigan. I wonder if a Mrs Corrigan at the e 59th st address appears in the census ?

I wonder if there is any way of finding out when both Agnes and Wilhelm Warnken died and about Wilhelm Warnken himself?

dettori28 thanks for your amazing help yet again I wonder if you had any suggestions as how I could try and find out if there are and descendants of  Agnes and Wilhelm?

Regards - Luc.

Hi Luc.

Just a quick thought.

The occupation of Agnes on the passenger list was Nurse - could it not be that the lady she was going to Mrs Corrigan was a "Sister" as in the nursing profession ?

I am still looking for other connections at the moment.

Regards.

Hi Sandra,

Your idea about Mrs Corrigan being a nursing sister  sounds about right .

How lucky to have found William/Wilhem's draft record for WW1 - He has obviously anglocized his name. But wonderfully it gives his date of birth. Thanks again to you the info that was missing is now greatly reduced.

I wonder if he and Agnes were buried in a veterans grave ?

AS the Elis Island site seems to be okay  I checked and I think I may have found Wilhem arriving in New York on 20th Nov 1902 on board the "Friedrich der Grosse"  the ship sailled from the port of Bremen in Germany. He was aged 15 and stated that he came from  Rhade by Hannover in Germany and that  he was going to stay with his uncle - Charles Warnken, who lived at 102 University place, Hoboken, New Jersey.  - So if that is right Wilhelm already had family in New York.

With much thanks again - regards - Luc.

Hi Luc,

Yes, I saw that record yesterday and it is the nearest to what he claimed the immigration date was on that 1930 Census BUT there were a few other William Warnken in New York, all born 1885 - 1888.  So there was nothing to suggest that is the correct one, the birth year would be a couple of years out. (Although that does'nt always mean anything)

He was'nt  marked as a Veteran on the 1930 Census.

The web-site listed in reply 1 shows New York City Deaths to 1948 (although it probably does'nt show everyone) - neither William or Agnes show on that, they started work on SSDI Index about 1956 but it was'nt completed until about 1961, so I suspect both may have died between during that period.

Regards.

Hi Sandra,

I see your point about William/Wilhelm Warnken.

So it looks as if this is as far as I can go - if you have any suggestions how I could try and find their descendants please send me a pm as I would be very keen to try and find them.

Anyway thank you so very much for all your kindness and hard work it is greatly appreciated  - thanks to you I know so much more about my great great aunt Agnes and what happened to her and I will be sharing it with my family -so that Agnes and Wilhelm Warnken's story is not lost and their branch on the family tree  is no longer just a question mark.

Many Thanks -Regards Luc.

Hi Luc.

Never say never. I am still looking - was able to work out some of the other Williams so that eliminated some of the other WW1 drafts.

Still can't find an appropriate wife for son William - maybe he did'nt marry ?

Maybe Shellyesq will find something in New York that would help you.

Regards.

Hi Luc and Sandra Dettori: Sandra's right. Never say never. Two possibilities exist.

I checked the grave site locator of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and found several Warnkens buried in Calverton National Cemetery, where William T. Warnken is buried. SPouses are listed if they are buried with their husbands at Calverton. No spouse is listed for William T. Warnken. That leaves two possibilities:

(1) Perhaps William T. Warnken's wife died before 1995 and is buried in another cemtery.

(2) Perhaps William T. Warnken's wife is still living.

I checked the online telephone listings for Warnkens in New York City. There were a number of them in Manhattan and more in New York's other boroughs and on Long Island. But no Warnkens were listed in any of the New York City zip codes--10028, 10029, 10034--that I've seen in this thread.

Zip codes 10028 and 10029 cover what used to be the German enclave on Manhattan's Upper East Side and the area slightly to the north of it (East Harlem). Zip code 10034, the last address of William T. Warnken, is at the northern tip of Manhattan. Not sure why he would have lived up there--perhaps a nursing home, perhaps a married daughter's residence.

Could someone please advise Luc the cheapest way to obtain a copy of the marriage certificate for William E Warnken and Agnes Stokes in 1912 Manhattan.  If it is for Genealogy purposes would this make it easier/ cheaper for him to obtain than perhaps having a Certified Copy.

Thank You.
Sandra

You could request a copy of the certificate for a minimum order of $4 as shown on this form:  http://www.familysearch.org/eng/search/RG/images/FReqMicrofilm.pdf  You should be able to find the appropriate film for the certificate number needed, in order to fill out the form, here:  http://www.rootschat.com/links/09aa/

The more expensive alternative would be to order from the NYC archives:  http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/marriage.shtml

Shelly,

Thank you very much - Conseiller/Luc, will be extremely grateful for that information, he was on the point of giving up yesterday so hopefully he can make a little more progress with the information the Certificate might give him.

Do you think there would be any chance of obtaining Obituaries for the sons George & William Warnken ?
Would an enquiry at a public library have any chance of turning up that information for him ?

Once again, grateful thanks.
Regards.

I'd expect better luck looking for the branch that lived in Bethpage than the folks in NY City.  There's a volunteer in Nassau Co. on raogk.org that does obit look-ups.

Unfortunately for Luc, the link to the Long Island newspaper Newsday gives a  bit of information from the article and then requires payment for access to the rest.

As for obituaries of the Warnkens who lived in Manhattan, they are likely to have appeared in the New York Daily News or the New York Post. The Post archives only go back to 1998. I searched the archives Warnken, but found nothing. The Daily News does not seem to have an online archive.

Thank you John, that is a shame - never mind - something else might come to light.  I think Luc is trying the Nassau RAOGK route which might throw up some other information hopefully.  It sounds as if he has some very interesting lines to search and is quite thrilled with it all - which is fantastic.
