Title: COMPLETED. John Prothero(e) Merthyr/Hereford
Post by: lizziemus on Monday 16 August 10 20:48 BST (UK)
John Prothero(e) married Sarah Ann Hope in 1872. I have found him in the 1871 census living at 71 John Street with his Father John (a blacksmith)and stepmother Ann along with 2 step siblings. He was born in Herfordshire. This all ties in with the info on the marriage certificate so I am pretty certain he is the the right chap!!

John and Sarah had at least 3 children William John born in 1873, Louisa born in 1877 and Mary Anne born in 1876. At 1 point they lived at 2 Bethel St Georgetown Merthyr.

Apart from that 1 census entry I can find no other record of John Prothero or his children using either spelling apart from a possible entry in Herefordshire in 1851 where he is 10 moths old. Oh yes and the school entry for Georgetown school entry for the 3 children in September 1879

Can anyone please shed any light

Thank you

YEEEAAAAHHHHH!!!!!! :)

I have been looking for these for 2 months, thank you so much - never thought there would be a third spelling.

I am fairly new to this so don't really know what to do with the  welsh ref you have given me for the 1861 census

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me

On the 1861 search screen - scroll to the bottom of the input fields until you see
CENSUS
RG9/  Piece Folio Page and input the reference in the appropriate fields

there is a little complication though!!!!!

1851 mother is Mary Ann

1861 mother is margret

they seem to be same person going by age and p.o.b.

but

1861 son James age 14 lab at Iron works b Mon - is transcribed as James Prothero -and on image his name is dittoed as Prothero
however
in 1851 James is transcribed as James Prothero age 3 -but image reads James Prichard????

then FreeBMD there is a marriage regDec qtr 1847
Monmouth
26 99
on same page (among others)
John Prothero
Margaret Davies
Mary Anne Pritchard

so could this be your John's parent's marriage ???
and which one did he marry??

If it is mary Anne then did she have an illegit son James -or had she been married previously???

a puzzle

Carole/Suz

Thank you very much for your help - by 1871 John the elder had  taken up with someone else - there is quite a bit of unpicking to do here!!

John junior's marriage to sarah also failed and he went back to Hereford according to family tradition - obviously some time after 1881. However I can still see no records of any of them anywhere in latter years.

In othere branches of the family I know the names on the census are incorrect and maybe that is what has happened here - I could be up all night trying to sort it out - how addictive is this hobby!!!! :)

Thanks again

I don't read  James as Prothero in 1851 -maybe its my specs but...

he is transcribed as Prothero - but each individual has surname written -no names are dittoed - and James surname does not look like the other Prothero names - for a start it has more letters

I read it as Prothero at first -but on second look it seems different

When I first saw it I enlarged it and read it as Pritchard which of course lines up with the possible marriage entry you found.

There is an 1847 birth for a James Pritchard in Pontypool and an 1847 birth for a James Protheroe in Monmouth (indexed as James Proth_Ve) but image is Protheroe

Good evening Suz

1851 mother is Mary Ann

1861 mother is margret

I have found a marriage in Merthyr in Sept qtr  1855 between John Prothero and Margaret Williams

Maybe that is the solution to the puzzle

A wife per decade - thats pretty good going!!!

So hows about John marries Mary ann Pritchard who is pregnant with James

They have John P junior

They move to Merthy and lodge with friends - for what ever reason he is no longer with Mary A and in 1855 marries Margaret

By 1871 he is fed up with Her :) and marries Ann - unfortunately I can't find a record for that marriage though. :)

I think John was very unlucky with wives

It seems James Pritchard was born 1847
later in the year John Prothero married Mary Anne Pritchard

Mary Anne died 1854

John Prothero married Margaret Williams 1855

Margaret died

Possible death reg
Margaret Prothero
Mar qtr 1862
Bedwelty 11a 52

John then married Ann Griffiths

Marriage reg Sept 1865
Merthyr Tydfil
11a 492
on same page
Ann Griffiths
John Prothero
(possibly Ann was a widow)

Hi

My Grandmother was the youngest child of John Prothero(e) and Sarah Ann Hope.  They had 17 children in total.  I have done a lot of the Family Tree (with help) and happy to share it with you by e-mail.

I could not read your personal message.  Believe I have to post 3 times before we can send a personal message.

best wishes

Hi again Liz

John Prothero born May 1850 in Longtown Hereford.  Sarah and John are living apart in 1911.
Gran always said her Father lived to be nearly a 100 and went  back to Hereford. Was killed picking blackberries??
Sarah Ann died in 1919 the same week as her son Thomas, who died of Injuries received in the War.

best wishes

Yeaah we have made contact!!!

Your Mum and My grampy (Glyndwr Prothero) were cousins so you and my Mum are second cousins   :)

My family come from the William Protheroe line. I have only been doing the tree for 6 months and was so pleased to have found a link - I have read your posts with interest. I found you by googling William Hope Merthyr and an old post on Roots came up about Mary Price.

I was at a family reunion in Cardiff this weekend where I took some of the info you had posted on roots- at least I think it was you, and no one knew anything about the london connection.

Lets keep posting so we can get on to PM then I will send you my e mail address.
