I've been searching for the 3rd wife (Margaret, nee Murray, b. Brixton Surrey around 1828-1834) of my relative, Charles Dalbiac Wildey Dixon, ... and apart from finding their marriage on 20/12/1873 at St Mary Haggerson, and her appearance in the 1881 Census when they were living in Bromley St Leonard ... the only thing I've found - no guarantees it's her! - is a possible death, in 1896, in Dunmow, Essex (ref 4a/392).
By 1891, Charles and some of his children were living in Billericay, so the obvious question is, how close is Dunmow to Billericay?
**Edited to add; - she doesn't appear to be in the 1891 Census, either :-\ **

try www.streetmap.co.uk to get a feel for the distance - I recall that Dunmow is north of Billericay?
-
Thanks, Mort - I'll take a look :)

Hmmm ... not terribly close, is it - 'way on the other side of Chelmsford! :-\
-
Yes - it is way the other side of Chelmsford and not at all close!
But then, if she has left Charles she could have gone anywhere

Just looked at Charles in 1891
The address he has (although in Billlericay Reg District) is actually in what is now Brentwood.
I am surprised it comes up as Shenfield Civil Parish, though I see it is Christ Church, Warley as Ecclesiastical PArish
Warley is now more or less swallowed into Brentwood. Christ Church is further down the hill from Brentwood Station, and it is B'wood Station that his address 'Station Rd' refers too. Nearby roads Myrtle rd and Rose valley (I flicked a page either way on census) are still there. I am trying tot hink if there is still a Station Rd as such.
Anyway ,the town of Billericay is about 4 miles from there.
And Warley is no nearer Dunmow!!!! (probably further at a guess)

Oh dear, poor Charles doesn't seem to have had much luck with his wives! The first one provided him with three children and then died ... the second one seems to have died producing a son (Thomas), ... this was right at the 1871 Census, and Charles was in such a mess at the time that he put himself down as "married", ... now it looks as if the third wife has either died, or left him!
I did notice that there was a Margaret Dixon, a nurse, ... she was still alive at the 1901 Census, an inmate in the City of London Union Homerton Workhouse, Hackney ... but I have a feeling I found her elsewhere, in 1891, actually working as a nurse at either a workhouse or a hospital.
Only had time for a quick cursory search for her under her maiden name, when I was in the Library last. Maybe I should look again .... and also see if I can find the nurse in the 1881!
???

Charles is again a widower by 1901
RG13 1666 27 45
still in Myrtle Rd, Brentwood (that is still there)

Thanks, lizdb, that's what I'd thought it said. So the Margaret Dixon who died in Dunmow is still a possibility ....

Dear Deb D
Is Billericay near Dunmow ?? Well I wouldn't like to walk it, I suppose Billericay to Chelmsford is about 12 miles, then Chelmsford to Dunmow I suppose is about another 12 miles.
But if you go into Google and put in 'Billericay' in the Maps section, it will show you Billericay, then scan up to Chelmsford, then to Braintree, then ease to the left, and before you know, you'll be in Dunmow.
