Any uniforms in the first photograph are of men in the Royal Navy rather than the army.

There is no Alfred Howitt listed in the Boer War medal roll for the Imperial Yeomanry/Scottish Horse. The man in the photography is wearing the ribbon for the Queen South Africa medal so he clearly fought in the Boer War. There is no regular cavalry man of that name either.

He is wearing a good conduct 'badge' - the stripe on his left arm. This suggests he was a regular. You should wait for Findmypast to publish the records of men discharged 1900 to 1913. They are now saying next month.

Have you looked for any WW1 papers? He would had given his previous regiment(s) when he enlisted. Also, if you know the birth places of any children it may help to identify his regiment.

just got back in thank you for reply ken, the name alfred Howitt could be wrong, it could also have been Alfred George Allsopp or Charles Allsopp either, are there any of those names listed both were in the boer war.   I am not very well up on military matters,  but when you say a regular what does that mean  ?

In the regular cavalry there is:

= Allsopp,C.,4175,Private,16th Lancers,Paardeberg,Johannesburg,Diamond Hill,Wittenbergen,Relief of Kimberley

Paardeberg etc are the clasps he was awarded with his Queen South Africa medal. His papers may be in the final set to be put online by Findmypast 'next month'.

There are a number of Alsopps listed on Kevin Asplin's roll of the IY - http://www.britishmedals.us/files/iya.htm

btw.. I see there is an attempt to put a crease in his trousers. According to the experts in the photograph section this fashion started c1905.
