Title: Completed with thanks - Finding Thomas.
Post by: Retpara on Sunday 22 August 10 10:21 BST (UK)
Hi Everyone,

Is there some kind person out there that can help me find Thomas Winter my Great Grandfather on the 1871 Census, so that I have the correct Thomas before applying for his birth certificate.

Information I have so far :- Thomas Winter b. Jan Feb Mar 1862 Merthyr Tydfil.  11a  309 FreeBMD.
His brother                           George Winter b. Oct Nov Dec 1863 Merthyr Tydfil.  11a  318 FreeBMD.

Both died together one 32 the other 31 respectfully in the 1894 Albion Colliery Disaster.

On Thomas's marriage certificate dated 1884 states their father was a Joseph Winter  (Puddler).
Just cannot make a link anywhere in 1871 for confirmation that I have the correct Thomas.
Many thanks in advance for any help.

Retpara.

Hi Cardiff,

Once again, many many thanks for your help in solving my last problem with Elizabeth Lewis she was Thomas's wife, whom remarried a Richard Lewis after Thomas's death in the colliery in 1894.

As you suggested I did try to trace George his brother whom is buried with him, but no joy with those searches either.

So here's hoping someone out there can help.

Cheers Retpara.

Retpara,

The Thomas Winter registered 1862, June Qtr,  Merthyr Tydfil 11a 328, Merthyr Tydfil was registered as a Winters. Have checked the original image and it is Winters - not a transcription error.

Free BMD has the death registration of Thomas Winter, Dec 1862, Merthyr Tydfil 11a 177. I think this is the Thomas Winter registered birth Jun, 1861, Merthyr Tydfil, 11a 334. Checked the Parish Burial records for Merthyr Tydfil and found a Thomas Winter, buried 2/12/1862, age 17mths, Abercannaid.

Was looking to check for possible Baptismal records for a Thomas Winter but the FHS Transcribed Index only goes up to 1837.

Like Cardiff, can't find hide nor hair of a Thomas that fits the bill in 1871 or, indeed, any members of the 1861 Joseph Winter family.

regards

Hi Hanes Teulu,

Thanks very much for your time and help much appreciated.
Just got back from Merthyr Tydfil, called in to the registrar's office and after a while of searching they found my Thomas Winter born in 1862 in Merthyr Tydfil with a brother George and two other children also the father was Joseph.
So I have ordered the birth certificate, but won't get it for a day or two. When I receive it I will post details on here about dates address etc that might help others find out why they are untraceable on the 1871 census.

Many thanks

Hi Cardiff,

Many thanks for your help in the past, will certainly post info on here as soon as I receive it as this was quite baffling perhaps the census could be searched via the address. Keep everyone informed.

Cheers Retpara.

Hi Everyone,

Certificate just arrived, info on certificate:

Thomas Winter b. 13th February 1862.  address given as 7 Tramroad N, Merthyr.

Father:  Joseph Bayles Winter.   Iron Shearer.

Mother:  Frances Winter formerly Joseph.

All living at  7 Tramroad N, Merthyr.   Informant was father Joseph Bayles Winter.

Hoping someone can solve this on the 1871 census so that I can confirm and trace other lines of the correct family.

Many thanks Retpara.

Hi Retpara

Not sure whether this is something or nothing but thought I would send it anyway...................... who knows?

1861 Census RG9 Piece 4055 Folio 121 Pg 49

Civil Parish Methyr -  Town Merthyr Tydfil -  County Glamorgan -  Living at 44 Tramroadside

Joseph Bayles Head Married b 1836 Merthyr Glamorgan Labourer in Iron Works
Frances Bayles Wife b 1835 Tremains Cardiganshire

Coincidence maybe ......... worth investigating further, most definitely!!!

Regards

Hi Z,

Many thanks, this does look a great possibility just come off FreeBMD and found 1861 was the year they got married, so this I think would be their first matrimonial home, but sadly I have also found that Frances died 5 years later in 1866 at the age of 29 and Joseph remarried in 1867 in Pontypridd. This may well be the reason cannot trace family in 1871, but it gives more information for searching.

Thanks again Retpara.
