In my research I found my Gran had amrried a chap called William Greaves in 1908 Sheffield (Born 1882) - In 1911 she is in Ireland with my Granddad - I'm sure William and Granddad are not one and the same and as I haven't found a death cert for William or any trace of him after 1908 - it dawned on me that he may have emigrated
I have a membership for a research site but I now need an upgrade to view emigration records which I am not willing to do on such a tenuous line of enquiry
Would anyone be able to see if William Greaves left these shores between Sept 1908 (their marriage) and 1911
I'd be very grateful for any help
T
Thanks

Your most welcome Ann. I can't see a William Greaves on passenger lists in that time frame I'm afraid. :(

Thanks Sandra
Back to the drawing board with this puzzle then
Best wishes

Border Crossing from Canada to the USA
Name: William Greaves. Aged 27 years Born about 1883 Sheffield. Single. Occupation:- Analyst
Port of Departure: Liverpool, England to Quebec Canada. Arriving June 1910 on SS Dominion
Nearest relative was an Aunt Clara Lee (looks like Evesham Street. Sheffield)
William going to Kansas City MO. Passage was paid by brother. Had $75.
The brother was R B Greaves 1800 East 10th Street. Kansas City.
Distinguishing marks :- Scar on upper lip.
Would you happen to know if he had a middle name with initial "L" ?
-
Blooming heck Sandra - you're good at this aren't you?
Everything fits except he has no middle initial- not sure about brother RB.. but it would make sense as to where he disappeared to. He still has living siblings and father in 1910 so would have thought he would have given him as nearest relative unless there was a falling out.. I know there is another William Greaves in Sheff at that time with middle initial H.
I really want it to be my William
Thanks
Anne

There's quite a few between 1906 and 1911
http://www.findmypast.co.uk/passengerListPersonSearchStart.action
-
Thank you - quite a few to go on - even between 1909 and 1911 - maybe I'll get to the bottom of it yet
-
I've checked the Wiliams on the link but I don't think any were him - I have found he had a brother Robert - could be the RB that was mentioned earlier by Sandra - maybe that explains it
-
Hello Ronnoco
Have you got the date of birth for Robert Greaves please ?
regards
Sandra
-
It appears to be July- Sept 1877 - but I've just found him on the 1901 census married to Edith with a baby son James = no idea why I haven't found him before
Thanks for your interest Sandra
Anne
-
No problem Ann - is he on the 1911 as well ??? That would mean we were still hunting for William ???
Regards.
Sandra
-
No - I've just checked - there are 6 possibles but none fit with place of birth or wife (is that a yippee moment)
-
Its definately not a grrrrrr moment - keeps the passenger list as a possibility.
This would match Robert and William (age just slightly out for Robert) ??? ??? If you can find a death record for the first wife ???
1920 Census Kansas City Ward 13, Jackson, Missouri
Robert B Greaves 40 Born England Immigrated 1909. Superintendant Insurance Company. Naturalization applied for
Helena Greaves 43 Born Iowa but coloumn on Naturalization should be empty and it says AL - which is Alien. So the birth place could be an error.
Katherine Mullaney 18 Step-Daughter
Ethel H Greaves 4
Mary F Greaves 3
William Greaves 34 Born England Immigrated 1910. Brother. Janitor. Office Buildings.
Just worked out why she was an alien - parents were born Luxemborg and Germany so she had'nt appied for Naturalization. ???
-
Unfortunately the wife has passed away by 1930 - so no more clues. ???
1930 Census Kansas City, Jackson, Missouri
Robert B Greaves 51 Born England. Immigrated 1909. No Occupation. Naturalization applied for.

Found Edith's death registration in July - Sept 1906 - quite confident that this is the correct one - Edith Annie - this is looking a distinct possibility that William went to America and Gran went to Ireland with Granddad
It would help me work on Granddad if this is so
Thanks for all your help - I am not jumping to conclusions here am I?
-
The 1910 passenger list showed him with a wife Amy Jane aged 22 years. The passenger list has manifest markngs for both names - so they were both naturalized.
Roberts Markings are 16 -12479 looks like 6/16/41 - xxx (crossed out) = (16th June 1941)
Amy 23 -67987 - 505 2/3/39 = 3rd March 1939
Wonder if they divorced ???
Also Name and Address of Nearest relative from Country Whence Came is :- Brother - Mr Greaves. 224 South Road. (Looks like Wallsley - could mean Wallasey on the Wirral)
Going to cousin:- Mr C Walsh. 1330 E 15th Street. xxxxxxx
If you would like a copy of this passenger list, please send me a personal message with your e-mail address. Maybe you can decipher better than I am.
Regards

I am absolutley blown away by this - you've cracked it for me -this proves it is 100% the William that I was searching for - they are his parents
I cannot thank you enough for what you have done
I don't know what happened between Sept 1908 and 1910 but the result is that William went to America ( he's lost 5 years of age but they are his parents so it is certainly him)
I cannot thank you enough Sandra - to think I've been pondering this for almost a year and you have sorted it within 2 days.
Very impressed and grateful

Hello Anne,
Thank you. It was certainly a roller coasters of "Ups and Downs" and it just goes to show that sometimes Census and Passenger Record Information have to be taken with a pinch of salt. Williams birth year varied from 1883 through to 1891 but thankfully the brothers had contact with each other and that enabled us to get the break through we needed.
Bet thats solved some mysteries in the family and opened up other questions.
I did wonder if the wife Kathryn Greaves listed on Roberts death certificate could have been the step-daughter Katherine - the age was almost identical !!
Wishing you all the very best with the rest of your research, you know where we are if you need further help at any time, lots of willing volunteers at Rootschat.
With Very Best Wishes.
Regards
Sandra ;D
