Several weeks ago I submitted my memories plus research into the department store, Grant Bros. of Croydon (I used to work there) to the 'your story' page of Museum of Croydon http://www.rootschat.com/links/09l4/
I've not heard back from them & the site seems to be inactive & not very well maintained with dead links :-\
It seems a shame to waste this work so has anyone got any ideas as to who might be interested to put it online?

Hi Jane.
Noting your location, would it be possible to get someone to phone them,or is the number not obtainable?
Dave.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply. I'm going to the UK in October so I could call them then to see what's up. The Croydon Advertiser newspaper has a good history section so I might contact them to see if they might be interested,

Hello Jane
I know someone very interested in "How our ancestors used to live".
Would your history cover that?
My friend's web site is http://www.mosleyfamilies.net/
and you can sign in as a visitor and leave your message for Martin in the Guestbook
Or PM me with details and I will email him for you
Best wishes

I was brought up in Sanderstead, South Croydon, and by coincidence my Mum has just been to stay with me and we talked about how we went into Grants to buy my school uniform, and my first bra!
-
I went to school at St Annes in Sanderstead and all my uniform had to be bought in Grants too. (Jnr school uniform from Hewitts in Church Street!)
Although the street level of the old Grants building is unrecognisable now - it's nice to see the upper storeys have been restored. And what about Kennards arcade!!! Anyone remember that?
-
Hi esdel,
I'm still travelling so away from my computer so once home I'll look into your suggestion,

Or you could email them?

And what about Kennards arcade!!! Anyone remember that?
Yes ;D ;D Didn't they do donkey rides there?
-
No help I am afraid Jane but this bought back so many memories as I too went there with my parents to buy my school uniform!
My parents brought many other things including G-Plan dining room furniture there as well!
Yes I too remember Kennards Arcade (slightly down market from Grants ;D )
Crystal ;)
-
Yes - more downmarket - but much more exciting! There was an Indian gent in a turban selling exotic oils, the bellringers on the archway half-way down - and YES the pony rides at the end!! Amazing place!!
-
I also vaguely remember a zoo of sorts.
Didn't the end of the arcade come out into rather a dingy street opposite Surrey Street market?
-
I recall buying my pet guinea-pig in Kennards!
Also the Guinness clock outside the Fairfield Halls.
-
My first Saturday job was in British Home Stores in Crown Hill - my second was in Joyce's boutique(!) opposite Marks & Spencer. Used to spend all my wages in Martin Fords!! Was up in Croydon last week - boy how it's all changed!!
-
It certainly has. I had a Saturday job in Turtles in Park Street.

Turtles was still there till a couple of years ago when Mr Turtle retired!! When I think of all the groups I saw at The Greyhound, Fairfield Halls, Orchid Ballroom, Top Rank Suite... poor kids nowadays have to go to the O2 to see dots on the horizon!
-
I saw The Beatles at the Fairfield Halls. ;D ;D ;D
-
Arrrrrgh!! You LUCKY thing!! My mum wouldn't let me go cos she'd heard about screaming girls wetting the seats!!! That would have been about 1964?
-
Just had to look it up and it was 1963, not long after it opened. We also had our school speech days there - not quite the same. ;) ;)

Hi Jane :)
Just randomly googling and came across your very old thread.
I used to work there too.......wouldn't it be strange if our paths crossed :)
