Hi
According to the Sussex Marriage Index the 1838 marriage says bachelor and spinster. The other does not have any further details. Pity as knowing the witnesses would probably help.
I will move this to the Sussex board and the experts there may be able to help.

I was hoping that the ages of their children would help establish which couple were which but they do not. In 1851 both have children with them who were born before 1828. However the West Grinstead John has a daughter, Ellen, aged 12 so finding her birth might give her mother's maiden name. HO107 1648 111 10
My money would be on the couple who are still in Steyning in 1841 being the 1816 marriage. HO107 1098 4/43 16 The eldest child with them then is Thomas b 1817.

I am the great, great grand-daughter of Ann Slaughter, b. Nuthurst, Sussex. 1828, who married George Tulett in 1851. Ann died in Lower Beeding, Sussex 25 Jun 1895. She was the older sister of Susan, William and Ellen and daughter of John Slaughter, b. 1795 West Grinstead and Sarah (probably) Langford, b. Cowfold, 1795. I have not been able to find the marriage of John and Sarah. I have found a marriage in 1816 in Steyning but believe that must be that of John Slaughter, b. 1786 in Steyning. If anyone can assist it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome
The Sussex Marriage Index only has two marriages for John Slaughter to a Sarah. The 1828 one to Sarah Langhorn in Brighton and the earlier one in Steyning in 1816 to Sarah Langford. The latter couple seem to have had lots of children baptised in Steyning. John is a labourer.
In 1841 your family have an elder child with them, Henry. Tracing his baptism may lead to a marriage. Have you found him in 1851 to know his place of birth.

Many thanks for your reply. A 3rd cousin and myself have been working on this family for a while and believe that Henry Slaughter on the 1841 census is John's nephew - son of William b. 1785 and Elizabeth Miles.
We believe that John Slaughter or possibly Slater is the son of
WILLIAM AND ELIZABETH SLAUGHTER or SLATER nee Bacon
JOHN SLAUGHTER (SLATER)1795 had three siblings that we know of:
William b. 1785, Phoebe b. 1792 and Thomas b. 1792 (both bp. 17 May 1792)
William b. 1785, d. 1852 m. Elizabeth Miles in 1810/11 in Woodmancote
Thomas b. 1792 and Elizabeth? had a daughter Caroline b. 1822 (is this the same Caroline who has a twin Richard and were both baptised 24 Mar 1828?)
Phoebe m. Daniel Harris at West Grinstead 1814
We seem to have exhausted the records that we are aware of to find John's birth and marriage. All census records point to his birth in West Grinstead and to Sarah's in Cowfold. Can see no reason that they would marry in Brighton. I was born in Hove and my father in Horsham so am quite familiar with the area. My Dad remembered his relatives' cottages in the Maplehurst/Plummers Plain area.
Maybe this is a puzzle we will never solve!

You could solve part of it by getting the birth certificate of the sister
Dec 1838 Horsham vol 7 page 313
Slaughter, Ellen
Will give the maiden name of Sarah

Many thanks Jonw65 - great idea.

I did suggest to slod junior that he trace that birth for Ellen back in 2010 so it might be worth asking if he did so. Save a bit of money! You can send him a personal message by clicking on the letter icon under the user name. Let us know what Sarah's maiden name is when you discover it.

Miwenwa, re your request on another (unrelated!) thread, concerning John born circa 1795 in West Grinstead
A possible there?

Where did you find the baptism Jonw65? Couldn't find it on FamilySearch.

Well, there are a couple of other men around from West Grinstead from that era called Slater/Slaughter. I can't tell you at the moment if they are linked, or are from different families.
Bearing in mind that in Steyning at the same time there was a John and Sarah Slater, and a John and Sarah Slaughter!
I do not belong to the the Sussex Family History Group. Info was from the Family Search website, where you can see many (but not all) Sussex PRs and BTs, if you register (free)
John

I apologise for assuming wrongly John

Have found Jno Slater in Family Search. Thanks for the tip, I had been looking for Slaughter.
-
Try Slatter too. Lots of varying spellings possible in those days.
-
Thanks Silljen, will keep that in mind.
-
Have received the birth certificate of Ellen Slaughter, sister of Ann, and her mother was Sarah Richardson (not Langford). Thanks to all for the advice.
