Title: Which cemetary
Post by: Rosalie21 on Wednesday 08 September 10 20:55 BST (UK)
I am looking for my fathers grave  ??? ???

My father was in the Merchant Navy and he fell from his ship in Newport Gwent  he was found six weeks later I think, so his death could have been 1945 though it was registered 1946

His name was Harold S Rogerson born in Hull in 1914 he was 31 when he died, I do not know the name of his ship and do not know how or why he died.

My mothers name was Rose Hill born in Hull in 1917 they were married in 1939 in Hull she never went to identify him,  as he had been in the water a long time my uncle went instead.

I have tried to find a newspaper that might have had something in but just get deadends, I went to Newport 35 years ago to try and locate his grave but not find it

hope to make another journey before the end of the year

Hi Rosalie
A couple of suggestions for you, in case you have not tried them
The local paper is the South Wales Argus, and I quite often see in their letters page people writting in asking the readers if they know/ remember anything about such instances, their web address is
 www.southwalesargus.co.uk
you can contact them from there.
Another source you could try is Newport Ref. Library as they have copies of the old S W Argus they are in John Frost square in Newport or email address is
 reference.library [at] newport.gov.uk
Or you could try St. Woolos Cemetery, Bassaleg Road, Newport, NP20 3NA. tel. admin. office 01366 263864
speak to them they are very helpful, they located 2 of my relations grave for me, and supplied a map of the site for me to find them.
Hope this is of some help
Regards
Rgee

My reply on that thread as follows:

Quote
His death was registered in the December qtr of 1946 in Gwent reference Gwent Volume 8C Page 219.

It's possible given the condition of his body that it was buried in Gwent

Your best bet is to telephone St. Woolos cemetery as suggested as they have the records for the two main cemeteries in Newport, the other being Christchurch.
I would think that if the body was buried in Newport then St Woolos would be the place.
The South Wales Argus do not keep records of their newspaper for that time and the Reference LIbrary would be the place to view it as I do most weeks but the most it would tell you is that a body had been found.
Telephone the cemetery with as much information as you have.

Just to add that I have emailed an eminent MN historian that I know to see if he has any further information about your dad.
With luck he may be able to identify the ship.

Hi Steve

Have sent you a PM I cannot thank you enough, I wonder why no grave or headstone I know one was paid for by my mother Mrs Rose Rogerson.

I see that you have posted on the Ships Nostalgia web site.

Try this site as it is where my historian hangs out.
Probably the best site for help in maritme matters.

Hi everyone

Just to bring you all up to date. My husband, myself and our three jack russells have just  visited the cemetery in  Newport Gwent layed flowers and said a prayer for my dad, it breaks my heart to think that no one as visited him in 63 years. Just a piece of grass no headstone nothing so sad.

The staff at the cemetery was great they took us to were he lays and told us about the cemetery and the people that are buried there.

We will be going back to plant a tree and a cross in his memory.

I would like to thank everyone here on the forum who as helped me in my quest, to Steve100 a special thank you and when we visit next time I hope we can meet up for a cup of coffee or maybe something stronger

love to all you all xx
