Hello, Can anyone do a look up for Herbert John Alfred Lait on the 1901 census or 1891 census. for Canada
Not much to go on i am afraid he would have been 12 years old approx in 1901.
His fathers name was Charles Herbert Lait, It's a long shot I know
many thanks Ken
-
These are all the Lait's on the 1901 census, from the site Automated Genealogy.
The Charles H one seems a bit too young to be yours?
He's lodging with what seems to be brother Ralph in a house in Montreal.
It's a good (free) website, and if you can work it out you can even view the image ;D

Carol

Carol. Hi many thanks for that information, it does suggest to me he is English which is what I thought, as the Charles Herbert I am looking for would. have been olderI wonder if you can help on another query for me do have any info on a James Lang married to Thirza They lived in Kenora, I believe they used to call it Rat Portage. Thirza was born in1861 Derby England and James came from Scotland they had a daughter called Elizabeth born 1893.
Thank you once again for helping me with the LAIT connection
Sincere Regards Ken
-
Ken
Do you mean are they in Canada in 1901?
Here is the website I use,I am tracing ancestors in Montreal for a friend, but they went over to Canada from Scotland around 1909,so they are not on the 1901.
Hoping they release the 1911 later this year ;D
http://www.automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/index.html
I live in England- I presume you're in Canada?
Regards
Carol
-
Hello Carol. The Lang's were certainly in Canada 1901 Thirza arrived between 1891 and 1893, Elizabeth was born there 1893. Regarding me , no I am not in Canada but in Bristol Uk, I thought you were in Canada.
Can you tell me where I can find out where Thirza sailed from or when she emigrated?
Once again manyh thanks fro your response Ken
-
I have never had any luck with ships lists, the ones I am looking for emigrated in the early 1900's and records do not seem to be online for that period.
The http://www.collectionscanada.ca/index-e.html website does have some ships lists- or just google search and check each one till you find a name.
Do you know when she last appeared on a census over here?
Did they marry here? She doesn't seem to be on the 1901 census list as Thirza Lang.
Good luck- sorry I can't be more help- maybe post another request with a different heading eg Ships lists and an approx date?
Carol

Thelma My sincere thanks to you, re Thirza lang she had a daughter called Elizabeth who married a Hamill(i think his name was Harrold)They had a son named James and i am positive Elizabeth lived at 214 Maddeson street North Kenora and in 1953 James is on a photo with his wife Winona and daughter Majory aged 12 months . If I can contact Majory then I believe she can give me answers to a number of enigmas. She would be about 53 years of age now and probably married .
If you can give me any angle on her I would be most gratefull, incidently there is still a Harrold Lang living at 214 Madison Street North . I have written to him twice and sent everything I have on the family tree including photos but no response sadly.
But once again a big thank you for all the information Ken
-
Hello
I will call the Kenora Town office tomorrow and see if they can tell me the dates that James and Elizabeth Hammill were buried, also if their son James Hammill or wife Winona is buried there. If any of them are then an obituary might help you with Ma(r)jory married name or other surviving family members.
Right now in Calgary it 3:05 and Ontario is 2 hours later than we are so the offices are closed now.
I will let you know.

Hello Thelma , thank you once again , I believe Elizabeths's husband's name was Harrold, I was sent the following information and this might help Elizabeth Hamill born 1853 interred March 8 1969 and Harrold E Hamill born 1897 interred 12 April 1958.
Regards Ken
-
Hello again
these are likely the WW1 military sign up papers for Elizabeth's future husband, Harold E. Hamill
http://data2.archives.ca/cef/gpc006/375147a.gif
you have this already
Harold E. Hamill interred April 12, 1958
Elizabeth Hamill interred March 8, 1969
They are buried in 6 East - 10 - lot 2 and 3
In the same section buried in lot 1 is Ed Hamill, 1909 and in lot 4 is William Hamill, 1914
No listings for James or Winona Hamill
Also buried in the Lake of the Woods Cemetery is
Thirza Lang
interred Nov 28, 1898 4 West - 7 lot 2
No James but a lot of Langs including another Thirza Lang died 1958
I would try one of the following to find more information. You need an obit for Elizabeth to see who is listed as her family and where they were living. An obit for Harold might help as well. The obits might list a funeral home. In my experience most Funeral homes have been very helpful and usually will mail out copies of the family information they collect (next of kin, addresses, who paid for the plot and obit, etc.) so you may want to try that route as well.
1. http://mykenora.com/myk/default.asp?scid=435
this is the Kenora Public Library. Perhaps you could email them and ask if they have newspapers on microfiche for the years that Harold and Elizabeth died. Ask if they will look up an obit for you. If they do not have the papers archived there they should be able to direct you to somewhere else
2. http://raogk.com/ontario.htm
this is a site where volunteers offer to help with searches close to where they live. There is a gentleman listed for Kenora, perhaps he could help you with getting obits, funeral home records, etc. If you decide to use this site you MUST make ONLY one request every two weeks - the administration monitors the site to make sure no one is abusing the volunteers time. If you make more than one request they may refuse to help you.
3. here are the funeral homes I found in Kenora. I would email or write to them and see if they can help you.

Hello once again,
this looks interesting although some of the names and dates are a little off - you may want to poke around through it and see if anything catches your eye. I think this is your Gertrude's family.
In the 1901 census Gertrude's son is William T, she has a daughter Maud E., a daughter Sadie. Most of the dates listed as "about ..." on the following are probably guesses.
At this link you can see the information and also an email contact for the person who posted the information

Hello It;s me again, Gertrude was born 1866 at Cheddar I know it says about 1862 but everything else seems to fit.
Guess what, another sister has materealised this is Agnes, Gertrude's eldest sister and I think the reason why they all came out to Kenora was because of Agnes. Agnes was married to a William Henry Hawley and Agnes died 1894 and he died on April 23 1927., they are both buried in Kenora. On his daughters marriage certificate ( she married in the UK this was Sadie Agnes Hawley who married Herbert Lait) Wiiliam Henry Hawley's occupation is listed as being "Gentleman". Can you give me anymore information i.e. any other children ,where they lived, Wiiliam's occupation ,
How do I go about obtaining the death certificate's for all my ancestors who have died in Kenora, I hope you wont find this request an imposition. I am most grateful to you for all you have already
done for me. Once again I am indebted to you Many Thanks Ken

Hello Ken
this family is elusive - there are a lot of Hawleys (some German, some English) in Ontario from the early 1800's and on but I cannot find any reference to William Henry, Agnes, or Sadie Hawley (or Howley, or Hawly, etc). They may have been in the USA or even England. They may also be in parts of Canada that are not indexed in Census reports yet. For example, there are also Hawleys in British Columbia where the Lait family ended up. Perhaps there is a connection there.
Anyway, it looks like you have found Agnes and William in Kenora's graveyard. Have you been able to find obits for them? That should list family members, possibly family origins, etc. If you can find someone to go look at their graves you may find that they are buried in a family plot (for example, my grandparents and great aunts are buried in an fenced in family area that also has the graves of my great grandparents and other family members). You may find some clues that way.
Did Agnes have a middle name that she may have used?
Still pondering what other resources to check. If you have any other dates, etc let me know.
Good luck
Thelma

Hello Thelma. William Henry Hawley was interred on the 23rd April 1927 but Agnes died on April 13 1894 and both are buried in Kenora. I do not have any obits on either of them. I do not know if they married in Canada or England.
At some stage they went to Minnesotta where Sadie Agnes was born 1880 or 1881,
the only other information I have is that on the 1871 cenus for the `Uk Agnes was a nursemaid to the Tanner family of Cheddar and they had a number of servants . On the 1881 UK census the Tanner family of Cheddar have disappeared(have they come to Canada and Agnes travelled with them) On the 1891 Cenus for the UK it shows that Sadie Agnes Wilson is visiting her Aunt Amelia Wilson schoolmistress of Lower Basildon. Berkshire with her Grandparents Aaron and Sarah Wilson .
Why was she in the Uk. Also the 1901 cenus shows Sadie to also be in the Uk and living with her Aunt Amelia at Upper Basildon Berkshire at the Schoolhouse her occupation is now shown as that of Teachers assistant. Sadie then marrries Lait in 1818.
Can you tell me did Sadie and her husband come back to Canada and then return to the Uk in the late 1930's after the death of Lait's father in 1936.Was Sadie present at her fathers funeral inApril 1927?
All I have really have is that William Henry Hawley died April 23 1927 and his buried with his wife who passed April 13th 1894.OH! the only other point I have is that on Sadies's marriage certificate to Lait, her father's occupation is described as "Gentleman"
Hope you can put this one to bed Thelma.. But many , many, thanks for all your help you are an angel and I am really indebted to you, you have already solved a number of enigma's for me BLESS YOU
KEN
