Hi

If anyone has access to burial records, would someone be able to assist and see if there is a Francis Crandon buried at Danygraig for me please? He died Jan 1933 at Tawe Infirmary, Swansea.

I'd also like to discover if there's any other family members mentioned in the same plot at all.

Hi Lynda.

I'll have a look next time I'm in County Hall - next week, probably. As far as I know the Tawe Inf. was actually the infirmary of the Swansea Workhouse! It later became Mount Pleasant Hospital as the workhouses were phased out.

Its possible - I think - that the patient was admitted from outside the workhouse as there was no comprehensive national health service at that time.

Had a look at this and this is the info:

Burial of Francis Crandon took place at Morriston Cemetery on 14 January 1933. Address is given as Forge and Hammer Court, Landore. No mention of Tawe Lodge but then again 'place of death' is not recorded.

Grave number is 429 E; no other burial in there though it was a 7' grave with room for 2 other adults under normal circumstances. Grave owner is Frederick Crandon of 38 Trafalgar Terrace, Swansea.

that's fantastic news and yup -- this is my rellie as the address on his death cert matches exactly. The Frederick Crandon mentioned is his son, who is buried at Danygraig with his wife.

It kinda confirms he didn't remarry either so that's helpful to know too. He had 4 kids with his first wife, my gr-gr -- I know 1 is at Danygraig plus one married and moved to London and is buried there somewhere so just leaves me with two more to try and find.

Thanks so much for your assistance plus the info regards Tawe being the infirmary of the Workhouse -- I wasn't aware of that but can add that to my list of things to find out more about...

For info my book on the workhouse covers the history of what later became Tawe Lodge but only up to 1900. Officials of the time thought that changing its name from the Swansea Workhouse to Tawe Lodge would help remove the stigma. The book can be obtained from the WGAS. Though its a long way for you!
