Title: Monmouth 1777 where might I begin?
Post by: Judy B. on Saturday 09 April 05 05:21 BST (UK)
Hi,

I have a will from Somerset, dated 20 Nov. 1777.   In this will property is left to the gentleman's son, "George HOUSTOUN, Surgeon, now of the town of Monmouth, Monmouthshire".

Is there somewhere I might find something on this gentleman?

Any suggestions welcome!

Judy

Gwent Family History Society have put the Poll Book for 1771 onto CD. This contains ... "The names of the Voters alphabetically placed, with their respective Residence, and the Names of the Hundreds and Parishes where their Freehold Lies."
There could be some information in that.

I know it's a hundred years later but in the 1881 census there are very few Houstoun's, there is a family a few miles north of Monmouth in Worcestershire, and when you search Somerset there are some Houstons in Frome, the name has dropped the second "U". probably no help at all.  Monmouth Museum have a website I think?  they may know of george as he was a surgeonin the town.  Cheers Fred
