Hi, my wife's Gt Gt Grandfather James Waters is listed in the 1841 Census age 30 as being in the Halstead House of Correction, cannot find him in subsequent census, obviously some sort of Prison, but how "bad" was it?
any help much appreciated
Cheers Toby01 :)

The first House of Correction in halstead stood in the vicinity of the later railway station, this was burnt down in 1781. In 1782 a replacement building was erected in Bridge Street, this had 35 cells, two treadwheel yards, an infimary, magistrates room, 5 day rooms, women's yard, kitchen and brew house. It was closed in 1841, the building was used as a police-station until 1851. It was then converted for use as a flour mill. The structure was demolished in 1965 and the site re-developed. <1> In 1782 23,900 red bricks and 7,100 grey stocks were supplied by Blomfields Brook Farm brickworks for the rebuilding of the House of Correction in Bridge Street <2>.

Thanks gortonboy for that information, interesting that it was closed down in 1841, one wonders what happened to the inmates?

Hi Toby01, you state you have not been able to locate James in the 1851 etc, there is a James Waters aged 39 born Chishill Essex with wife Mary aged 36 and 6 children living in Heydon Village, Royston, might be worth a look to see if it is the same James you have as your wifes relation possibly!

Thanks Keyboard 86
Not the James Waters I am looking for, mine was married to Letitia Cant, they had five children, they all disappeared in the 1851 census. Suspect Letitia was embarrassed by her husbands imprisonment, moved away or changed her name?
Thanks anyway

After it was closed , prisoners were transferred to Springfield Prison.

Hi keyboard86
Thanks for that info I will check out the census, seems highly likely, poor Letty she would have been 39 years old, must be something about the Waters females a lot of them died in their 30s and 40s,
cheers Toby01

Hiya
James and Letitia (Letty) are my gggg grandparents. They had a son Daniel (one of 5) who is my g.g.g Grandfather. He married Caroline Emberson in 1859 in Thurrock. He moved there to work on the railways. Subsequent generations ended up in Barking (also for work reasons apparently).
I didn't know anything about the Halstead correction place but me and my family are meeting up with another long lost Waters cousin in April 2012. She is coming over from New Zealand and like my mum, seems to have done an awful lot of family history research!
