does anyonew know how i can find out if a relative was in the armed forces?

Try www.cwg.org you can key in your ancestors name and see what comes up.

If it is the 1st World War you can also try the National Archives site: http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/militaryhistory/
WW1 medal cards can be purchased to download online (£3.50 GBP)
